Well this Grandpa stuff can really get to ya.
My daughter & Son-in-law gave birth to a very healthy boy (Nolan Patrick Wiggins) last Saturday morning. All was going well until the nurse noticed his lips were turning blue. Our world went upside down and has been that way ever since. Turned out the little guys heart was plumbed backwards. So what are the chances? 50/50? Tube "A" into chamber "B"? "B" into "A"? He was rushed off to UCSF Childrens in SanFran where the best facility for this type of treatment is available. The staff are great and helpful. So tomorrow at noon PST the little guy will have his heart surgery to correct the problem. Since he is so healty the doctors want to get it done ASAP. The first 24 hours are critical and he'll be outta the woods after 48. Its gonna be a long week. TIA - Coach |

It is amazing what the capabilities of our modern medicine can do! I will be thinking of the little fella and keep him in my prayers as well. Hopefully you guys will here some good news today. |

Sorry to hear about that. I know the feeling of having the baby in ICU and it's tough. But technology is great and I'm sure the doctors will have him back to 100% in no time. Best wishes for your family.

I've never heard of that before. Makes you wonder how he was able to stay so healthy before birth? I sure hope the little guy pulls through, sounds like he is in good hands.

So sorry to hear that he has to go through that...and your daughter & SIL and you and the rest of your family as well. Modern medicine can do miracles. We will pray for the safe, healthy and quick recovery. Please keep us posted.

Steve our prayers are with you. Erin, my daughter was born with a heart problem and underwent open heart surgery within 48 hours after her birth. This shook our world to the core. Her surgery was a Riley Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis. Back in 81 it was risky with only 10% success rate. Today with modern procedures the same surgery is 90%. She going on 30 and nothing holds her back.
She swam competively, played soccer, and LaCross in high school. Everything will work out fine. |

Thanks gang, for all your well wishes.
We're at the hospital in SF, and the little guy is under now. Kinda tense, but Mom and Dad are feeling good about this. Kev, the miracle of birth is really impressive. What happens is the heart has a "bypass" tube that sends oxygenated blood from Mom into the body rather than pumping into the lungs first. Once the baby is out, this bypass starts to dissolve as the lungs are now functioning. The previous generation called this "blue baby" as the heart went through transition. In Nolan's case the hosp staff identified the blue nose and lips then started diagnostics immediately. They added O2 to keep him oxygenated, and a "drug" that keeps this bypass tube from dissolving. For now we're finding distractions..... It is SF and the people are most interesting. |

He is now resting comfortably in baby icu. With all the tubes and wires hooked up, he is a very scary sight.
Next 48 hours will be his roughest. |

Good news.
Nolan is doing well enough that the doctors have closed his chest today. Weird seeing a baby laying one the table like that. But he's is doing as the doctors anticipated. |

Nolan is getting stronger. His chest has been closed for 24 hours and the heart pacer removed. His color is returning to normal and peeing like a race horse.
He still has the breathing/feeding/drainage tubes connected which will hopefully be removed in the next few days. What stands above all this is the strength of my daughter Kristi and husband Robert. Two very special and wonderful people. |

I wish we had good news to post.
So rather than that, I'll tell you all about the fund raiser some of my daughter's and son-in-laws friends set up tonite. A small Mexican Restaurant named Cafe Bravo in Oakdale CA donated the profits from its sales from 4-9 PM this evening! My son-in-law, Robert, is a fire fighter in that town. So it seemed that all the firefighters, their families and their friends all showed for dinner. We brought a bunch of folks from our MotherLode Corvettes group down from Sonora. At one point I'm pretty sure the joint was at capacity. An unbelievable out pouring of friendship, concern and generosity! I'm sure our kids will have their share of expenses when this is over, yet the donations and assistance from the firefighters is overwhelming. BTW, If your travels ever take you through Oakdale CA, stop by Cafe Bravo for a great meal. Tomorrow we head back to the hospital. |
