The recent "Brakes" thread got me thinking about the old days of racing and one of my guys sent me this link showing some old racing footage of races before safety harnesses and other safety equipment. It was a dangerous sport then... as it is now, but we have a lot better equipment, cars and technology today.

WOW! You couldn't have paid me enough to race one of those old open cockpit cars! I wonder what the average lifespan of those drivers was. No long I'd guess.

Those cars didn't handle very well and the drivers/mechanics had big cajones.

But faster stuff is still being raced. Harnesses? RollBars?, we don't need no stinkin' rollbars.

120, 130 and 150 mph. The first 2 with me driving.

Dirt track is not that much different today.. yea better helmets, roll cages, and 5 point harnesses.. but they still flip them probably a couple times a night...

Have you ever gone to one in person? Just wondering, I've only been to a couple myself..

I went to a couple dirt track races in NJ. Fun stuff minus the coating of dust you leave with in your eyes/mouth/nose

I ran dirt tracks for 4 years. But, for me, hittin' the wall had a slightly different meaning.

Yea, that's me on my YZ250. I raced a 750 Yam against the XR's but I was sponsored by the Yamaha shop that I worked in (free bike to race). Most of the time I ran 2 classes (250 & 750).
750's are damn, damn fast on a mile track. Out of the corners on one wheel pointed at the wall.

Dayglo orange & black leathers.

The only thing is Bill still wears them when he grabs a burger and beer at the casino. He thinks it's safer gambling that way.

Orange and black the traditional HD colors. We would go to the flat track races at Sturgis every year and I was always amazed at how violent that 750 class was. It was brutal. The Yamaha's always did ok but at Sturgis if HD didn't win there would be hell to pay.
