Stock 1985 Bose system, everything else in the system functions perfectly

Symptoms:

1) loud and consistant switching noise when DNR switch is turned on or off, does not vary with system volume or signal source

2) no signal from signal source (radio or tape) when DNR switch is on unless volume is quite low

Not a problem that can be fixed with contact cleaner, all amp/speaker combinations work very well with DNR off.

Thoughts?

IIRC DNR = Dynamic Noise Reduction.

I don't remember exactly how it works, tho...

However, I would consider removing the radio and shipping it off to Dr Don's for a rebuild and nip any issues in the bud right now.

New belts for the tape player, cleaned tape heads, good light bulbs... just overhaul it.

Andy, it was rebuilt about three years ago.

You are correct that DNR equals Dynamic Noise Reduction - if I recall, it was a way for companies to avoid the Dolby licensing costs and still have at least some noise reduction.

Yea, that sounds right.

If you are having a problem with that circuit, I would say it is internal and electronic. Not something you are going to "clean" away.
