Thanks for this post. It cleared up a mystery for me. My Chiltons said the code was either a MAF or a MAP.

Learned something today I had a code 34 on my 1984 Corvette. The Chiltons said it was either a MAF or a MAP sensor. According to some other literature I found it was a MAF sensor so I started looking for it. Turns out my Corvette (is this true with all 1984's?) does not have a MAF sensor. Sooo I looked at the MAP sensor and found it unplugged.(?) Not sure how that happened but anyhow problem solved no more check engine light. If only everything was this easy......... Another clue for me early on was the fact that I couldn't find a MAF for this year Corvette at any of the parts houses.

MAF = Mass Air Flow. 1984 Corvettes did NOT have this part.
MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure. 1984 Corvettes DID have this part. Get a new one. It's important for the computer to know this information. It's about how much air is going in, so it can adjust fuel mixture accordingly. |

Welcome to the site. If you look above, they are listed under 1992-1993.

That tells me your Throttle Position Sensor is more than likely failing.
You need a DVM - Digital Volt Meter - and back probe the TPS. Turn on the key - don't start - and watch the TPS voltage. As your manually turn the throttle, the volts should climb from about .54 to 5v. If in that arc, it decides to drop out for a moment, well, you have found the dead spot. The TPS is on the right side of the throttle body, and has a 3 wire connector, IIRC. There is also the IAC - Idle Air Control - but that is below the throttle body; and has a square 4 wire connector. |
