So I've decided to start a program. It's for toolaholics like myself. Unlike AA, TA only has two steps:
Step 1: Admit you have a problem. Step 2: Realize your problem isn't really a problem and go buy more tools. Once you can follow these two easy steps, you will be much further ahead. Here's my latest ebay victory: It's a Kent Moore J-33431 signal generator. It's used for testing the dash to rule out if a sensor might or might not be working right. Used for the digidashes, not sure about the later ones. I will probably never use this thing in my life. But I saw someone else needed it...so I needed it. That's the same way I picked up my Kent Moore ABS tester. I figured one day I might need one so I should buy it now. Not too flawed of logic, I think, but still. I shop for bargains and when I see one I pick it up. This is why Harbor Freight is like a candy store to me. So what tool purchases have you made that were unnecessary but you bought them anyway? AND have you used them? Matthew |

Well, you ARE a tool so the subject makes perfect sense. By the way, this is posted in OT so I can play around if I want to.

Tool Time 12 Steps
1. We admitted we were powerless over tools - that our lives had become unmanageable. 2. Came to believe that a power tool greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. 3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of catalogues as we understood them. 4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of our peg boards. 5. Admitted to retailers, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. 6. Were entirely ready to have Sears remove all these defects of character. 7. Humbly asked to remove our overages. 8. Made a list of all items we had harmed, and became willing to mend them all. 9. Made direct mends to such tools wherever possible, except when to do so would degrade them or others. 10. Continued to take inventory and when we were missing something promptly admitted it. 11. Sought through browsing and search engines to improve our contact with sellers as we understood them, hoping only for knowledge for us and the power to make them work. 12. Having had a rude awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to toolaholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs. |

That's ok at TA. We help people cope with their tool envy and have counselors available 24 hours. You should meet with your TA sponsor to discuss this. Also remember that our 10th commandment is it is ok to covet thy neighbor's tools, and you may even use them...with permission of course. But you must return them in same or better condition within a reasonable period of time. Breaking this rule is grounds for termination from TA, and a public flogging. Matthew |

Add another page to my book.... Today the assorted nuts and bolts I ordered from Summit came in...a mix of grade 5/8.8 bolts to keep around since I always seem to need them. I was so excited I made labels up for them and carefully sorted them in my organizer. Almost like Christmas!

So in conjunction with buying tools....is organizing tools. I spent a few minutes in the garage today tinkering with different things. Decided to finally hang up some oversized wrenches that don't fit neatly in the tool chest. My 1" through 2" set and some offset box wrenches. I was quite happy with how it turned out. My wife didn't share my enthusiasm. Can't understand why?

Bill, I see your engine hoist and raise you a 12" 'I' beam and chain hoist. It could lift a Corvette body without breaking a sweat. The heaviest thing I have 'hoisted' with it is the front of a full size 1978 Dodge Ramcharger. I hooked it to a jig on the front of the frame and lifted it up, 440 big block and all, so I could work on the front suspension without jacks / stands. Oh, Matt, since you mention over sized offset box wrenches...my set only goes to 1.5", so you got me beat there. |

My name is Andy. And I buy tools.
My garage is full of them. Some very useful, some not so much... I have a real trick pilot bearing puller. Will use that a few times, I suspect. Got this Ram Nailer gun thing... I doubt I will use that again until I frame in the addition in a few years. I have the engine stand and motor hoist. Will use both soon if my Vette doesn't figure itself out. I inherited a ton of stuff from my Uncle-in-law. Mostly hand tools, but gee, it's nice to have the long versions, and extras of every main metric and standard bolt - 8mm to 19mm, and 3/8" to 1". I do need more diag tools, but TunerPro seems to be working well so far. I would like some of those trick Kent-Moore tools that Matthew found. oh, well... off to fix the gas heater. |
