Back ground: 1992 LT1/MN6 Dynaspark opti

LTCC, reads optical data, fires appropriate GM Denso made coil from the LS1.

Taylor Wires

New NGK platinum plugs

Fuel Filter replaced in May.

EGR failed, causing car to run like shit. This is interesting... After replacing the EGR, my 92 ran great for a few days. Then it started knocking and missing again... found a loose plug wire (#1). I reseated the suspect wire into the coil, all fine. Then yesterday, the knock is back and its running like shit, again! Now this is where shit gets weird... I was trying to track down the miss, when I touched the right distributor harness, it smoothed out... so I need to check that! I am really leaning towards a bad fuel pump... I think it has been a secondary problem for some time. So a new pump it is!

Hopefully that will do it. If not ........... I know that diagnosing the problem and fixing the issue is the order of the day but it appears that throwing parts at it may have some benefit. Especially if a part is suspect. Good luck Andy though luck has nothing to do with it.

Well... I just realized stupid might... duh...

10 days ago, the battery went dead. Left the lights on. I don't think I have had to refuel since then, so the trip at 107 is a LIE... and my gas gauge is a lie... so I may just be out of gas.

That or the time I drove one a bad EGR actually trashed something inside the engine.

At some point, a fix must finally stick here...

You could always try putting the gasoline on the outside of the car and accidentally dropping a match?

OK, back to the problem. I don't understand why if you touched the distributor harness and it smoothed out, you'll replace the fp? I can understand if you want to replace it for other reasons (ie, 170,000 miles and you want peace of mind), but that logic doesn't follow.

I guess once you refill the tank and test it out, things might be better. But if you're low anyway, maybe you've got a bunch of crud in the tank and it is blocking the strainer. Could be something to check out.

Tip of the day.

Never run your tank below a quarter of a tank. Refuel often .... unless your going to the track (autocross, dragstrip) .... Then 1/4 to 1/2 should be more than enough.

This is why I have been stocking up on fuel pumps lately.
Pretty scary what I got to see, and the Vette only had about 60K on it, but look for yourselves.

Just to point out, this is a well cared for Vette. I guess, the strainer and tank just have never been touched, like in many Vettes.

I wonder how long these contacts (not sure how the black things with springs are called in English) are to begin with? Considering Andys mileage, the pump should pretty much have had it.

One more, because it looks real bad, but that's how it looked, before I took the motor apart.
This is a stock Delco pump out of a 90 Vette.
Click on the pics for even scarier images.

Brushes, Axel.

With that much crud, were the springs even pushing them against the rotor?

I doubt mine is that bad, but, replacement pumps have been treating me poorly.

The OEM lasted a long time; then died. I have been replacing the damned things about every 2 years! This one was put in in either 2008 or early 2009.

When the pump fails, its like its out of gas and the drive gets very "brittle", if you know what I mean.

I have a new racetronix unit from Lingenfelter coming in. Wasn't any more expensive than the other shit I have bought!

I am going to gas up the Vette shortly.

Ok... added gas (5g), still running like shit.

It is having a hard time holding an idle. I rev it up, fairly ok, but at idle, its piffing and buffing...

I am going to go back out in a bit and confirm all plug wires are where they belong. Can't overlook the easy stuff!!

Thanks Bill on the brushes, it can be so easy when you know it . The clean surface tells me though, that was the only good thing about the condition. Than again, the pump held up for about 20 years, not bad.

@ Andy, can you make another scan with TunerPro or Datamaster and upload the ald/uni file, that might help to see what's going on.

About the condition of the pump, I had it in a dry airtight plastic box for about 5-6 month before I took it apart. That surely contributed to the corrosion. The crud was there for sure but probably got worse with storage.

So take Tommys advise "tip of the day" serious and don't let it sit for too long with an empty gastank.

ok... plug wires are not crossed... no misfire that way.

I am going to go out with some brake cleaner later and clean all the harness ends to the coils. Just to be sure, and re-secure grounds for the coils.

it sounds funny at idle... like its puffing and huffing to keep running. I can hear the IAC making adjustments...

I am wondering if all the games with the EGR didn't flood either one, or both, cats with too much fuel, causing them to ultimately melt down and fail.

Did you pull the battery cable and reset the ecm after to correct your fuel tables?

oh. yea... a couple of times.

I am also going to do an ECM swap, just to be sure.

I am concerned that the backfiring, the fuel richness... all of it, didn't conspire to kill one or both of the cats. That's my fear.

Also, when I was checking stuff, I found that the fuel pressure dropped off REAL fast... so now I can honestly suspect the pump. It wasn't pumping strong, in my opinion, anyway... I have a small Autometer gauge on the fuel rail.

When the fuel pressure drops off, that normally means the check valve in the pump has failed or is failing.

I doubt the injectors are the problem. They are only 2 years old Bosch III from FIC. They are literally the last things I will suspect.

Thanks, but I need a GenI opti. Our Optis are not compatible.

I have sent an email to Bob at Dynaspark... I will be curious what I learn.

There seems to be one major difference... the other folks had their cars just die, mine runs like shit.

I have a few other ideas churning in my head...

Well, since your fuel pump isn't that old, did you check the connections at the pump?
You had this lean condition and I was pretty certain, that would be fixed now with the new EGR. TunerPro data should confirm that.
If it's still lean, I am leaning towards fuel supply.
I had a buddy, where the hose on top of the pump got torn by the pressure.

Fuel pressure drop problem is where I would look. Either sticky injector, of bad fuel regulator is my vote.Diagnosis is in order.Clamp the fuel lines test, will tell you alot. Obviously pressure line clamp only, than clamp return line only. If memory serves right, and pressure holds when return is clamped, FPR is culprit. Check Manual, has test in it. Also could pull the rails, and energize pressure and check for leaky injector.

Problem more on a cold start???/

I can't do much today... the weather is icky... raining hard and quite cool, if not cold! Ok... it's 58 and raining its ass of. That's good enough reason to stay inside.

Back to the fuel issue. I have the TPiS AFPR. I think it is suspect, too... I also have a spare FPR that I can swap and test with.

I am replacing the fuel pump... I suspect the Autozone fuel pump is junk... namely that it's from Az... ugh... junk shit if there ever was. But when you are dealing with a dead part, you get what you can and start moving again. This time, I think the part is failing. I am aware of the harness failures of the fuel pumps, but the last time I was in there, mine looked really quite good, but that is about 3 years ago.

I am also reaching out to the LTCC guy... I am going to ask if he can check my unit and make sure it's up to standard. Just a diag check. I can't do that and I am willing to eat the postage both ways just to get it checked. I am sure it's ok, his system has a good reputation, but right now, I am grasping at anything I can't categorically test.

If you need it I have the right side factory cat off my 95 available, but shipping certainly won't be cheap. I already sold the driver's side cat, so I only have the passenger side available.

If you want factory cats I have the ones from my car. I haven't checked them out yet. They should be off of the car this weekend.

Thanks, guys! I have a pair of cats that I can use... so I am not in major trouble...

I am going to swap them tomorrow.

TJ - how many miles on your cats? The factory ones start to fail at about 110k miles and are usually done by 130k.

Maybe a good idea to attach this thread for future reference to the previous troubleshooting?
I always hate to read 50+ posts that lead to an open end.

That is a good idea.

Once I put this to bed, I will merge the two threads and update the original post with that fact and some other relevant data.

I am slowly getting my head wrapped around this mess.

Yesterday, I finished replacing the cats and with the new fuel pump the car started up and ran BRILLIANTLY.

Sounded nice and quiet - meaning no exhaust leaks. Just as it should. A little burble out the pipes, and the expected smoke from some PB Blaster used to separate the old right cat from the pipe. Nothing at all unexpected.

After it idled for about 5-7 minutes, the idle lost it, the chugging was back, the idle was all over. I would hit the gas and it would stumble before catching up. So now I have a potential heat soak issue.

I am aiming at the following:

ECU failure
plug wire failure
coil failure
Dynaspark failure
LTCC brain failure

I am going to replace the ECU and plug wires. If it still does it, I will then test each coil. The LTCC does have its own error coding system, but the engine needs to be running to see it and I must get the lid off... which is pickled with RTV! The last time I tried, it wasn't all that cooperative...

Before I remove the Dynaspark and the LTCC, I will run another datalog and post. This is assuming I haven't found the problem some other way.

I would not be surprised if a coil has failed. Nearly three years ago now, I was driving home and the serp belt exploded. It took out the original LTCC harness. This, I know, bent some pins on at least 1 if not 2 coils. I had to straighten them out. I am wondering if that didn't break something internally and it has taken this long to manifest.

Well, that's good and bad. Some issues sorted, so at least those are out of the way. Can you get your hands on a stock opti?

No one seems to have one laying around, so no stock opti's.
