Here is my newly finished horn button and cap:

Resized Image

It started a few years ago when I had my own 1977 flag design etched into an aluminum button designed to perfectly replicate the stock horn button. It's a direct fit.

I had it installed on the car for a few years as a basic cap and button. But something was always missing, and while I have been toying with this idea for a year or so I went ahead and found a way to make it happen and finished it this morning.

First I made a template and used a punch to locate the drill / tap locations.

After the punch marks were set, I used a #21 drill bit and a 10-32 tap to make the proper holes for my cut down 10-32 Allen / button head screws.

I put a dab of epoxy on the flared rivets and on the backs of all the screws. This will help with vibrations...since it's a metal sandwich now instead of a plastic sandwich, and the epoxy will help keep everything together and tight.

Opinions? Questions?

That looks really nice, Matt.

Did you have someone do the etching?

It almost looks like it could be CNC'd.

Bill, yeah I have a friend do the etching in his machine shop. I designed the logos and flags, and over the years, I have had quite a few items custom etched for my car.

Oh, and I forgot my emblems I made that mount to the front of my dual carbs. One is my personal brand...as it's developed, and the local C3 club I co-founded with Curtis74.

Looks really good! I'd like to see the pics installed on the steering wheel.

All done on a CNC machine. The detail is fantastic. Those last two buttons will get a very light sanding to achieve a brushed finish, and the etching will be inked in.
