Letty wrote in "OT" : At least one is on, while sitting at the light it hit 237 but it was 95 outside. Better than the 255 the other day... when it's warm - and I shut it off, the fans still run for awhile. I plan to actually open the hood the next time before I shut it off and see. I have no idea the temps that they come on at. Had this issue with the'96 also and finally got it straightened out. That sucker never got over 195. Figured if an oil cooler cools the oil, then it should keep the engine cooler thereby keeping my coolant cooler??? Obviously I know nothing about this stuff...

Like Andy(95vette) said an oil cooler won't help, when you're sitting at a light , there's no air passing over the cooler and the purpose of the cooler is to help keep oil temps down at high speeds.

230 is normal for a C5 at a stop, 255 is too high (IMO).

the important question is: What are the temps on the highway?

There's at least 3 things to check - air in the cooling system, fan operation (are they coming on and off correctly) and debris in the radiator.

Some stuff from another forum:

1. Air in the system.

From the service manual:

Start w/ a cold engine
Remove rad. cap
Idle for 1 minute
Install cap
Cycle RPM from idle to 3000 until coolant reaches 210F
Shut off engine
Remove cap
Start engine
Idle for 1 minute
Install cap
Cycle RPM from idle to 3000 until coolant reaches 210F
Shut off engine
Remove cap
Top off

AND:

Look carefully at the front of the heads. You will see a metal like that carries coolant between the heads. It's a small tube like perhaps 3/8". There are attachment points on the passenger and driver side. On the passenger side there is a hose from the radiator that attaches. On the drivers side there are two bolts that connect the plate the tube is welded into, to the head. Perhaps easier to see if you remove the plastic fuel rail covers. Loosen the two bolts a little and remove the pressure cap on the surge tank. Air that is trapped at the top of the head will be displaced by the coolant. When the coolant starts to run out, tighten the bolts.

Fans:

"The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).

Did the fans turn on? They should both have come on at low speed at 226 degrees. If the temp kept climbing they should have gone to high speed at 236 degrees. You can force the fans on early by turning on the AC . Did the fans operate correctly? If not there are 3 fuses that you need to check. All 3 are in the engine compartment fuse box. #14, #46 and #49. There are also 3 relays involved in the circuit. If you can identify which fans are coming on at what temp i can help identify the relays are working properly. If only one fan runs, which fan (passenger side or drivers side and at what temp?

Debris in the radiator:

If the fans are working correctly then have you inspected the fins of the radiator. To do this you need to either remove the top radiator support or jack the front of the car high enough to get your head under there to look up into where the AC condenser and radiator are located. Is there a lot of debris up in there? Leaves, paper, plastic bags etc. Clean out the big stuff by hand and then you need a strong stream of water coming through the fans from the back side and then through the radiator core. ( Opposite direction the air flows so that you push out any dirt, small stones, etc rather than lodge them into the fins deeper.

BTW, the fans on the 92-96 LT1's are programed (stock) not to come on until 228 and 235 (varies slightly depending on what year).

Wow, thanks for the information.
I have some out of state company this weekend but do plan to still look further into this. I have been told that the C5 will run hotter than the C4 and it's normal. Still bugs me. After changing the thermostat, I let the car idle for quite some time, the temp never got over 198. While driving, it runs 205-414 or so. Letting it sit, stop and go and all that the other day at 95 degrees outside it hit around 237. Later I drove around the train switch yard here and looked for a graffiti one to take a photo of and inbetweeen the trains and in the gravel, it hit 250, I drove home. But, the other day at 255 the lights on the dash came on and said 'coolant over temp'. Changing the thermostat has seemed to help some.

Then there may still be some air in the system.

It was with the air on....
he came and took all that crap apart cleaned it all inside and out, flushed this, filled that, you name it... and now it hit just over 230 the other day but that's been it. I cleaned under there and did what I could to get any possible air out, etc... and in the end as usual - made me feel stupid. But, he said the previous owner, far as he knew, didn't do any of that...
I have had an oil cooler set up given to me but can't use it on that car. If any of you C4 drivers would like to have it for a decent price I have it posted on Craigslist (Jonesboro, AR)...
