Wow I'm glad you are OK, I'm also glad to hear you haven't given up on the LS swap. I carry a fire extinguisher at all times.

UPDATE:

I pulled the right head... a few things:

1. The cat to collector bolts seemed ok.

2. Head bolts all felt ok, except one felt less that tight, compared to the rest.

3. No sign of damage internally. Lots of carbon build up.

4. Which means the head gasket was ok. I will add, the various parts of the head gasket where coolant is controlled are seriously bulging and looked like a breach wasn't far off... In short, I don't think the head gaskets were long for this world.

There is quite a bit of flaky carbon build up on the heads, and quite a bit on the piston faces. There was also some loose oily carbon.

I will post pics later.

Dave - THANKS!

This engine is coming out... I have a 96 LT1 with 60k miles waiting to go in.

My reason? I will need this engine so you will have something to build my 383 with next year.

Also, this engine has 185k miles... and I feel odd about putting clean heads on a bottom end with that kind of mileage.

Ok... I found something last night.

I will post pics tonight.

This is the right side (evens, right? Always get that screwed in the brain pan...). Cylinders 2 and 4 have nice carbon ridges that span the entire circumference of the cylinder.

#6 has a partial, with a neat little sweep up to the head gasket, and then a neat little sweep down... which to my eye implies that yes, I was right - the gasket popped, but not from the top (head side) but from the bottom (block side)! And it's been like this for some time. One more backfire was all it took to make it permanent... I will remove the gasket and check... but it almost feels like the fire ring on the gasket has been eaten away between itself and the block.

I will post photos tonight. I got tied up in another project and didn't get to shoot pics. Will do that tonight.

no question the motor mount heat wrap was the fire source.

I think the fabric was so abraded, that the heat from the manifold, and perhaps some leaked fuel from the dead cylinders, lit it off.

dry as a bone.

I think the manifold got hella hot when the cylinders lost compression - all that fuel flying out the hot header.

I was looking at the heads and the valve stems are an ashen shade of white.

With some promised pics...

nothing seems out of whack... the head gasket looks ok, but there are signs of something on the cylinder walls.

the water was the normal leak out when the block was breached.

I have figured it out... how to convert from 1992 to 1995.

I want to convert to a 1995 PCM because it would give me sequential injection, programability and computers that are not impossible to get.

Now... how to do it... The trick isn't replacing the harness... it's MERGING them.

Basically, cut out what isn't needed by the new harness, and drop that in where it needs to go...

SInce I want SFI, I would need to bring the injector sub harness, O2 sensors and such. Also, all sensors in general, cause I want to replace the leads... too many have broken.

Also want to use 1995 because the ABS computer is standard from 1990-1995 - 1996 is different. So if that has changed, what else?

Next up, figure the differences between a 1995 and 1996 harness, cause I already have a 1996 harness.

You might consider how will using a 95 ecm affect your aldl port, as well.

True....

the 94's have a flash programmable pcm as well, and they use the GM ODB I style diagnostic connector.

I'm not sure what issues you may run into when someone wants to hookup a scan tool and program in an earlier year vs '95. And if you program in a 95, the tool may want the ODBII style plug, not sure what issues you may run into with the ODBI style plug being installed ect..

I need to determine the differences... but the cable I have has only 3 wires that plug in to pins. So for this, I should be ok.

I have TunerCat RT, so all I should need is a stock BIN, at worst... also, what is the reason for the VIN in the PCM? I hope it isn't checked, or else I will need to get a vin from that model year with 6spd and I should be ok.

My only remaining question... with each PCM, does the CCM need to be upgraded? That's the killer question... and I am begining to think it does.

I don't think the vin matters with the programming. I'm sure the CCM has to be upgraded, too, since they "talk" to each other. If it's a new CCM you have to set the mileage within 100 miles of driving, I believe.

But the 95 aldl is the odd year - OBDII connector with OBDI data. The tech 1 requires a special adapter for that year only. OBDII readers won't work, nor will OBDI readers.

Seems like all the hassle might not be worth it in the long run?

You might be better off with an aftermarket ecu since you want tunability and sfi.

Good question.. I would think it would as well.. again the data packet from PCM to CCM should be consistent from 92-94 atleast..

94 was OBD 1.5 where some features were not accessible

I know a way of checking...

Well... we be wrong... this is the breakdown for CCMs:

1991 - 16155502
1992/3 - 16193459
1994 - 16212971
1995 - 16223622
1996 - 16260516

In short... each year had its own thing going on!!!

MAJOR UPDATE:

I have found enough evidence to tell me that the root of all my problems was the Dynaspark.

I pulled it apart today and found the following:

* Quite a bit moisture INSIDE - much like if you shook a damp hand on a plate.... drops everywhere. And this is supposed to be super sealed. Yes, the Dynaspark sat on the old motor, outside. And yes, it got rained on... but 90 minutes of sun should have baked it all off. The OEM unit, with a smear of copper RTV on the cap, was as dry as a bone.

* The opti sensor is supposed to be a Mitsubishi part. I have yet to see a "3-Diamond" logo on the part.

This is just additional fodder... I bought the unit in July 2009. It failed in Dec 2010 when the tone disk, apparently bent by ham-fisted installers, are up the opti pickup and caused the car to die (H16 code)

Last year, I had all sorts of odd-ball running issues, and then sent the Dynaspark back and had it serviced, again, and it was sent back with a "Mitsubishi pickup". This was because he bought pickups from a different source, but had nothing but problems with them.

I cannot directly criticize Bob, really, his customer service has been quite good... but the part just isn't all that great.

I refuse to tell someone outright "NO!" don't buy this, but I sure don't feel I can endorse it, either.

In the end, I am going to take the lid and disk retainer off and put them on the OEM Gen2 Opti. Since I run LTCC, I don't need the cap/rotor.

If anyone wants this thing... lemme know. It won't be free, but it sure won't be $500, either. I will even include an OEM GM cap and rotor. It is a Gen1 unit - 1992/4.

Personally, if you have the need, and have a good set of OEM/Mitsu electronics, then by all means, this might be a good deal for you.

yesterday was a most annoying experience...

First off, the screws I had for the opti were not long enough to fit the cap... so I tried to countersink the cap, but the drill had 3 dead batteries... All I did was make a huge mess with RTV.

Then my friend and fellow guru, Robert, finds that the right cat was shit... toast...dead to the world... a bunch of grey melted powder. Something really failed over there. And I don't know what yet. May never figure it out.

Time to research a new cat.

That's it for now.

So your line of thinking is:
1. Prevalent reoccurring misfire from the bad Dyna Spark Opti.
2. Caused fuel to load up in the right side cat.
3. Which over time destroyed the cat causing and exhaust restriction on that side.
4. Which set the motor mount on fire.

Go back to reply #11. But of course that doesn't account for moisture in the opti.

point taken... and the only reason I wrote what I wrote was that at that time, I hadn't disconnected the right cat from the rest of the exhaust.

My friend Robert picked up the cat and a bolt fell THROUGH... I knew it fell in, but it went out the back! A very bad sign...

I am getting news cats... done with this.

bogus, I have a box of Optispark parts. One is a known good sensor / timing wheel setup (minus the rotor) that I used with my Delteq. Let me know if you need anything.

Thanks!

I have a good Gen2 opti ready to go. Just need longer screws, or, drill the countersink deeper. Now I have charged batteries, drilling deeper makes more sense.

I also have some LS6's that would help. But those aren't free

A quick update...

Got much assembled today. Using high-tack, I set the gaskets for the waterpump and timing cover. This will give them a chance to set up and be stable when its time to install.

Replaced the seals on the timing cover.

Installed the valve covers and intake manifold.

The interesting thing... I used The Right Stuff when I did the intake on my 92. I Am reusing the 92 intake (EGR complications), and when I removed the sealer, it came off soft and rubbery. I installed that over 3 years ago. There were no signs of oil leaks, either.

That's why I threw my RTV away.

The neat thing is that you can run the engine (or trans) right after assembly. I always had leaks on the transaxle gear cover using RTV at the track (changing gear ratios).
Head out on the track 10 minutes after assy. and no leaks.

I have been using it for some time, and I have been happy with it, but this is the first time I have such empirical data.

Andy,

When I did my waterpump I used the gaskets dry, with just the red gasket spray on one side, no leaks! Same thing on the thermostat housing.

Some people laughed at me, but it can work. I think on a good surface RTV can make leaks more likely. I use the right stuff when I use rtv.

These were good quality water pump gaskets, came with the stewart pump, thicker and softer than most paper gaskets.

I am using the OEM felpro gasket... and have found that the gasket with high tack works perfectly, and is easy to remove next time.

the engine is about ready to drop in.

A few details here and there, and it will go in tomorrow. Once in, then the rest of the drive line and the exhaust and we are DONE.

God willing and the SOB doesn't leak.

I still have to replace the rear main seal, can't do that on the motor stand and just go over everything...

I fixed up the GM OEM Gen II Opti to use the aluminum cap from the Dynaspark. A little Right Stuff goes a long way.

If tomorrow morning goes quick - motor off stand, on hoist, rear main swapped, clean up harness, relocate the LTCC and that's about that. I should be done in a few hours.

My friend Robert has been a real help with this! I wouldn't be this close to finishing without his assistance.
