going to buy a hardtop for my 89. found a used one that I think came off a later year model. what do I need to do to my car to make it work on my 89. will it just fit, or do I need to do some things to my car that will let a hard top fit on a covertible?

I am pretty sure that 89-96 hard tops will fit. The targas are all the same for that vintage and for the most part, the differences seem to be with the windscreen headers.

Just make sure you get all the mounting brackets with it.

Yes. They used to be really hard to find if you didn't get them with the top, but apparently they finally started reproducing them aftermarket:

What kind of price are you looking to pay for the top? The price has come down in the market a bit over the past few years. I used almost never see them under 1000, now it's common to see them for 750 or maybe even less.

No way of picking up? If you had a friend near the company in question, they could pick it up, hold it until you can get it.

Good excuse to drive the car.
