Enclosed is a chart I worked up of C3 exterior paint colors (click for better detail - 15 years makes for a wide chart). Paint names are from the Corvette Black Book. Approximate colors (and I'm sure they are approximate) are from paintref.com Lines connecting color names mark when the paint code stayed the same but the color name changed. All mistakes are mine, but I'd appreciate knowing about them.

The question: why were there so many color changes in 1982, even from the 1981 Bowling Green colors? One would have thought that things would be relatively quiet in the final C3 year - and few 1982 colors carried over to 1984 ...

I checked a couple of sources and War Bonnet Yellow is supposed to be 1971 and 1972 only - Metallic Yellow seems to be the closest in 1973. I know a War Bonnet expert (he has a 454, an LT1, and a "color problem" ) - I'll check with him.

Possibly the color changes in 1982 were related to the forced change to base/clear coat paint.

My perception (and I could be wrong) is that the Corvette folks had already gone through that when they moved from St. Louis to Bowling Green.

Great work! No black from 1970-1976? I didn't know that!

A logical guess... it was the transition between the C3 and the C4... so they tested colours on the C3 for the C4. Then, when the C4 comes out, thin the herd.

According to this site, there was only 1 Chartreuse '77.  Guess that's why I never saw one.

Yeh, I've seen a few in the light blue, unusual color choice for sure.

I have some pics of a friend's light blue before he sold it. It wasn't bad in person. Much more of a subtle impression than you would think.

But only one ...

... the crazy person in me would almost repaint a "normal" color into Chartreuse - you certainly wouldn't see yourself coming and going.
