My very little goddaughter needs a model Corvette of her own (not one that she will steal from her long suffering older brother).

The requirements:

1) Inexpensive (she's going to destroy it).

2) Pink or purple.

3) Not a Barbie car.

I was thinking of getting an inexpensive white 1:32 model, masking the shiny and rubber parts and painting it. I don't have a lot of time or skill. It doesn't have to be the best looking paint job ever, but it can't flake off like crazy.

Questions for people who just might be able to help:

1) Can I use something like Krylon?

2) What should I mask with?

You can use Krylon but, it should be Krylon Fusion (made for plastic), available at Wallyworld.

But model car paint like Testors would be better.

2) What should I mask with?

Preferably a Batman Mask to conceal your identity (playin' with model cars at youy age?).

The blue painter's tape at HomeD is fine as long as you don't need a fine line edge. If you need a good edge, check Wallyworld in the automotive Dept. for the lime green 3M masking tape (but it's way more sticky).

The paint will stick longer if you very lightly sand (very lightly) with 600 or 1000. Wipe & dry with water only.

I intend to go metal - just cheap metal. If it's metal, do I go with the normal Krylon?

Yea, just use a very light coat first then a slightly thicker one (full coverage).

The Fusion & Testors are better for bare plastic, the regular spray paints will go on everything else except over lacquer.

Thanks, as always, Bill - is there any point in trying to clearcoat it?

Well, you aren't going for the aesthetics.

But, it would be another layer of protection (just a little bit because it's not urethane). Might protect a light color better.

And it won't start hiding the small details like another coat of color would.
