Any one else have problems with the rear hub nut loosening - the large nut that secures the stub shaft?

It's become habit for me to carry a torque wrench and socket to re-torque the nut, sometimes daily. I think the remaining vibration I'm feeling - and part of the reason I procrastinated on checking tires - may be the rear hubs loosening up.

Any solutions/suggestions for keeping the nut tight? Lock nut, chemical locker (loctite), real castle nut, double nut, just deal with it?

I dont know for sure but I seem to remember those nuts need a bunch of torque, like around 150 foot lbs. I can go check the shop manual this weekend.

Actually it is 180 ft lb, but most people torque them to 200 ftlb.

200 ft lbs. that's the revised number.

There is also a crown cap and cotter pin.

If it isn't staying on, I am thinking it wasn't torqued to 200 ft lbs. The published number was 160 ft lbs, but somewhere in the late 90's or early aughts, they found wear issues or something and determined that they needed to be tighter.

I am actually surprised that they didn't find this in the 80's during racing, but I suspect they changed bearings every race or 2, so they never had a chance to wear out.

Also, look into getting a new nut. I think they are pinched, and if over used, will loosen up... Worth checking out.

Seems to happen when the wheel bearing goes bad. Check the bearing.

ditto on the bearing and a new nut

if the new nut is troublesome, then the threads are shot on the stub axle

BTW Jeff is one of the fastest autocrossers @ the local autocross, so figure in a ton of side loads!

These bearings are a weak point.

New bearings, torqued to 180 lb/ft. Old nut, new crown, washer, and cotter pin. Cleaned the splines on the stub with a wire brush and brake cleaner.

I did get new nuts from Rock Auto, but they didn't seem correct when I tried to put them on. Maybe that's the pinch Bogus is referring to? I'll try to install those nuts.

Glad I can wrench on my own car!

Were the hubs pushed all the way on during install? Were the rear bolts on the hub torqued down? Doesn't sound right for it to come loose by itself.

I would double check the bearings since you were driving with a loose spindle nut.

What brand bearing did you install and how many miles?

MIBearings with 370 miles.

I cleaned the stub splines with a wire brush and brake cleaner. Sprayed a little WD-40 on the shaft when I installed the bearings. Torqued the nut while the car was in the air - stuck a punch through the brake caliper into the vented rotor to keep it from spinning.

Once you retighten that spindle nut, you might want to check the bearings for excess play. The aftermarket ones are not known for their quality, and driving with a loose spindle nut can cause damage. Not saying it happened, just something to look for.

The new spec is 200 lb/ft.
