... terrible behavior from Grace.

bandhead

Drove down from outside of Philadelphia to Atlantic City this afternoon. After behaving beautifully for a little while, I started to notice what seemed like a transmission slip, mostly at low speeds. It got worse over about 25 miles, disappeared, and than returned intermittently. We got to Atlantic City and pulled into a parking garage. When using reverse, the car began to buck in a fairly scary manner. For the last couple hundred feet it bucked in drive, but less horribly. Parked the car and restarted it just in case - it bucked in park like it had in reverse.

Thoughts?

2003 vert, A4, very stock, just turned 43k miles

Have you ever serviced the trans as far as fluid/filter?

I think the trans should throw a code but not sure. You can try to read the codes on the dash:

That sounds control related... not mechanical...

These later 4L65's are not bad for durability, but they do have a lifespan... figure 150k miles.

But this sounds like an electronics failure. The computer has lost its mind and can't control the trans correctly.

I would suggest finding a good shop with proper diags.

I had read about the earlier ones having valve body issues, but that was supposed to be corrected before your year.

We got up this morning, checked out of the hotel, and went back to the parking garage. I pulled the codes, but there were no current (non H) codes. Started the car up: bad bucking and stalled a couple of times in idle, though she would move in drive. We parked the car and I told Ivelis (my wife) that I was going to perform a visual inspection of the engine compartment.

I poked around for a minute and than - paydirt. We have a fancy, heavy, and reasonably effective Blackwing air filter. The clamp following the MAF had come almost completely detached over the previous 75 miles, allowing a stream of hot and uncontrolled air into an engine that was believing what the MAF was telling it. I grabbed my geek Swiss Army knife and realigned and retightened the clamp. Ivelis restarted the engine and suddenly Grace was back to being her usual wonderful self.

Wonderful! Glad it was an easy fix. Sometimes the symptoms mask the real problem

Oh, man, I'm glad it wasn't anything worse. And glad that you were able to fix it yourself. I was starting to worry about my trans.......

Sometimes the best thing to do if you have an automotive issue is to pop the hood. Any way you look at it, you left the casino a winner. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
Glad it was an easy fix, John.

I had a similar problem with my 92... and it was the EGR valve giving up... combo of intake and exhaust leak - ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

It's funny - when somehing goes wrong with the Lauren, I think to myself "Okay, you're an old car, I'm the fourth owner, how do I fix you?" When something goes wrong with the Grace, I think to myself "You still smell new, I'm the original owner, how can you do this to me?"

perception is a bitch, ain't it?

Parts wear out. They break. Sometimes sooner than others...

I am the 4th owner of my 92... considering I have owned it for 13+ years now, their ownership means nothing.

Quality. It always goes back to quality. Except in this case where it was simple mechanical malfuntion or failure. I'm not afraid to modify a weak link with additional hardware but that's me.

I didn't say there was any rational reason for my perception ...
