Hey Will, if you need some advice on assembling that motor just let me know

The red (aluminum?) part on the front...is that the timing gear itself or some type of cam retainer or what?

Yea, that is the upper timing gear for the camshaft. It's aluminum and a (2) peice design (the 4 bolts hold them together)... it's adjustable every .5* .

Actually there are a fair amount of little parts to that Comp Cams belt drive. That cam gear bolts to a tapered and keyed mandrel with a single left hand thread bolt (center)that mandrel bolts to the front of the camshaft (with 3 allen cap screws) and a thrust washer set encased in a stainless steel housing that bolts to the front of the cover behind the gear. You have to juggle bronze shims around inside the housing to get the camshaft end play in spec. There is also an oil seal in that housing for the mandrel to go thru.

We did have to modify the cover assy a little.... grind on the backside and the block for clearance.... then just drill out the dowl pin holes a little so that you can center the entire assy by the 2 oil seals - Then bolt it up to the block tight.... otherwise you run the risk of having the seals leak because the cover is not in perfect alginment with the camshaft and crankshaft. This is a common mod and the way everybody makes sure belt drives don't leak.

This is what it looks like with the upper timing gear and belt removed.

We did run into a little snag yesterday with the oil pump being too short for the 8" oil pan sump but Bob at Titan has shipped me out a spacer to fix it.

More pics for those that are interested.

Engine is complete. It just needs the valves adjusted but I will do that on the day before the dyno... I don't want it sitting around for 2 weeks with the valves open.

This thing may turn out to be a complete dog but it's a pretty good looking dog.

My brother got the crank mandrel Accy Drive built and it looks like it's just under 6" from the front of the block to the end of the mandrel... this Accy Drive was a real SOB to build because of how low the engine sits in a C4 Corvette and the steering rack being infront of the engine v/s under it like most cars... You would think with all the engine set back, fitting the Accy Drive would be no problem....

With the car here in Va and the engine in Ga there were a lot of long phone calls between us about how to situate the 2 simple things (Alt and Vac Pump) on this Accy Drive....

All that's left is some minor work. Need to build an adjustment rod bracket for the vaccum pump and re-paint the rocker covers where we welded the new fittings on them.

We go to the dyno on the 13 June.

I highly doubt that will be a dog!

I just learned about vacuum pumps on race engines a couple weeks ago...interesting to see that you run one.
