As I could not find anyone selling gaskets for the SuperRam intake in Germany, I decided to make my own ones ...

After I discovered that 1.5mm thick gasket-paper is not easy to cut I created a CAD-model of the needed set and got them cut by laser at a local company.

If anyone of you guys does need the 2D-dxf files which can be processed by a lasercutter just send me an e-mail and I will send the files to you.

Here is a pic of these DIY-gaskets:

Best wishes

Wow. That is a great job. Fortunately the gaskets are still available in the United States. I made my own runner-plenum gaskets using the old-school ball peen hammer method.

What was the costs to have that done?

It would have been nice to have the runner gaskets at an auto parts store. Like Matatk I used old school with my ball peen hammer. What type of company do you go to get the laser cutting done at.

Hi,

the laser-guy was http://www.lagratec.de/schneiden/ and two sets cost me $70 what does include setup costs of $40.

Lagratec uses a pretty small cutter like you can do at home. I'm sure there are companies around you who can laser- or watercut gaskets. Just do a google search on your city. For Chicago I found http://www.loganlasers.com

If you need CAD-Models and dxf-files of your gaskets just send me a scan or photo of a drawing on scale paper and I'll do my best getting it in the computer.

Well, bad news. I just got off the phone with Accel/Mr. Gasket tech support. The part is discontinued and they have no plans to reintroduce it. I think I am going to look into the cost of having them reproduced locally.

Well, step one is I found a local shop that said they can do the gaskets. They have laser and waterjet cutting. I spoke to the owner, he said he needs to see the example and the gasket material/thickness to quote a price. I will have to pay to have the gasket computerized because the above examples do not include the lid gasket.

Biggest obstacle right now is the gasket material. To match the Mr. Gasket original material, it is 1/16", which is not the problem. Mr. Gasket and Fel Pro both have that thickness available. The problem is the gaskets are sold in rolls which is curled up, and that is difficult to cut on the waterjet machine according to the guy I talked to. I called Mr. Gasket and they do not sell it in flat sheets. I am going to contact Fel Pro and see if they are willing to sell it in sheets vs rolls.

So far, this won't be super cheap just based on materials and setup alone. Add in shipping costs and everything else...I don't expect it would be less than $50 a set.

I've also made some inquiries and have sent the pdf and dxf files off to begin the process with a local source. I'll let you know what the results are shortly. I think I got one of the last sets that Lingenfelter had available a couple of weeks ago.

Keep me posted, Scott. Did your guy tell you where they would be sourcing the gasket material or what type it was? There are a few companies online that manufacture gaskets, but I don't know them and not sure on the quality of the gasket material itself.

We discussed his experience with making automotive gaskets which they have done but did not get into specifics of sourcing - Bob mentioned he had several material vendors he could call on. I gave him a link to this page for additional information, primarily to show the interest as a community since that has an effect on how he might want to proceed. I did mention the materials being rolled up but he wasn't concerned - vacuum table. I'll still need to get him the cover gasket as you had mentioned.

The reason I ask is because the lid gasket when cut would have a lot of excess waste material. The above drawings don't take that into account. It would be more practical to put the smaller gaskets inside the lid gasket when being cut because it would save material.

Eike - Did you supply the gasket material or did the laser cutting company provide it?

I spoke to the one local company and his prices were outrageous....he wanted $50/set to cut the gaskets from the provided drawings which didn't include the lid gasket or raw materials. The search continues.

I did supply the material but it was not expensive (less that $25 per m²) and easy to get off eBay.

Was sold as a roll but if you put some books and other heavy stuff on it for a few days it will be fine.

As for the lid, I use silicone ... a PITA to get off but never got a leak.

This is the response I got from the one gasket place I am looking at:

"Best are pdf and dxf files, with a preference for pdf. These should be files that are scaled to print out at 1:1 or actual size, with any critical dimensions called out, such as bolt holes, bore size, overall length and width, etc."

I just talked to my guy at Wesco Laser Machining about the possibilities of making these at his shop. Not a problem cutting them but he is questioning what materials to use for the gaskets. He has multiple sources but he wants to know the specifics of the gasket material because of course there are multiple choices depending on the application. We talked about some alternative local shops to talk to that do a lot of custom gasket cutting, he handles cutting the larger formats for these guys. My next step is for him and I to get together so he can look at the set I have. Nice plus is that I have the complete set including the lid. I'll keep you abreast of our conversations. He's positive he can offer us a solution but we'll see.

From what I have read or checked it is a compressed fiber cellulose gasket and should be good for 250 or 300 degrees.

Hi Matt, So far it looks like this gasket set is doable at a reasonable price point. I met with a gasket shop yesterday to see what they can do. We’ll need to have the lid gasket created but that’s not too bad, probably will run ~ $55 as a one-time charge. We’ll be comparing the ones Elke so kindly created and shared with the Mr. Gasket set I got from Ligenfelter. Once everything is validated as being sized correctly it looks like we’re under $50 per set, with the lid being somewhere around $20 - $25 per.

Material wise they are pretty sure they have the correct cellulous gasket material but they would like to understand the air pressures the gaskets should be spec’d to. The gasket material Mr. Gasket used verses the new material they have visually look the same (without the white Mr. Gasket logo). Heat wise it should be good as it’s rated at over 250 degrees but they would like to understand the dynamics of the air pressure the gaskets need to withstand and I’m just not too sure about what to suggest. Does anyone have any ideas for this? They showed me some other standard materials that had heat ranges up to 800 degrees and with a 1500 psi rating which I suspect greatly exceeds what we need.

My plan is to forward the CAD drawings Elke created to them and to drop off the lid and the full gasket set I have to validate everything before they begin cutting. This leads to the next question – how many sets to cut knowing there is the upfront charge to create the lid gasket which needs to be amortized? After we’ve determined the psi rating that is needed they will be ready to go, so what’s the suggestion on how many to begin with?

Scott, I don't think that air pressure levels that are super important to worry about.

My original thought was to make 5 sets as a test run based on price, but you need someone to be willing test the gaskets during their install and report back.

Im in for 2 sets for sure. Airpressure should definitly not be a problem. Even a supercharged car will be lucky to see 20 psi manifold. My superram is on the shelf. I can mock up fit but cant do a full install until Im doing another build. jp

I know these things take time so I wasn't pressing the issue, but certainly looking forward to a status update.

If Mr Gasket is not interested in making them (I'm sure they have a reason) why would another large company want to make them? Mr Gasket already has everything all set up to do so.

Sorry for the delay, our business has kept my nose to the grindstone it seems. So here’s where I’m at on this. I’ve sent the company I'm working with, Accurate Gasket, the gasket files created by Elke and have arranged to go by the shop on Friday of this week to deliver the lid gasket which Rosie will use to create the file needed to cut this gasket with the others. I’ll be taking my SR lid along for her to look at for any question they might have. So, all things being equal, it looks like we could have product as early as next week depending on how long it takes to create the lid gasket.

I’ll post an update on Friday after I’ve met with the shop and given them my full gasket set as the master set. I’m not planning on having the throttle body gasket cut unless you think they are necessary also. Just as any FYI, Accurate Gasket has been cutting regular and custom gaskets for almost 50 years and are well known here.
