Was the 6000 really meant to compete against BMWs and Audis? Seems crazy.

That was the sell. I'm not sure how many actual BMW or Audi drivers it actually converted. Later in life, when the STE got all wheel drive, this seemed at least a little more realistic.

A follow-up - you have to remember that 1983 wasn't exactly a great year for the less expensive 4-door Audis and BMWs. For Audi, the most reasonable competitor would have been the 5000S (the 4000 was much smaller than the 6000 STE), with a mere 100 bhp powering 2,624 pounds and a $14,355 base price.

For BMW, the closest 4-door "competition" would have been the 528e - a much nicer car, to be sure, but with 121 bhp powering 2,953 pounds and a base price more than $10,000 greater.

I'm not seeing as many Grand Nationals on the road as I used to. For some reason they always get a look from me. Great post as usual.
