Day One:

We made it from Times Square to downtown Pittsburgh. Long day - left at 7:00 AM, arrived at 6:30 PM. Today is the big test, where we find out what kind of miles we'll actually make per day on most of the Lincoln Highway. Lauren is fine - she loved the Allegheny Mountain driving late yesterday (mid RPMs are good to her). We're also getting over 23 MPG - I had planned for 22, so that's a win.

Matthew, please check your PMs.

Makes me want to take a road trip ...... and I loathe long driving trips now .......... I'm more the fly and drive type now. My best driving days are behind me, at least for now. You never know ......... What I mean by long trips is 4-6 hours is OK. 13 hours .... not so much.

We are fine - it's been a busy couple of days of driving.

We are staying the night just over the Nevada border in Wendover. A highlight from today is below.

A great pleasure to meet BillH today. We are spending the night in the Salt Lake City 'burbs.

An update on the car: we ran into a two hour traffic jam yesterday (Sunday) for the 280 on-ramp in Richmond, CA. Lauren was fine for the first hour and then vapor-locked (or something like it), causing wild surging and five (aaack!) stalls. We did eventually sucessfully make it to Lincoln Park, where a friend of ours was waiting with champagne and cheese.

Today, going fast all day, Lauren happily covered about 750 miles without incident.

I should have warned you about SF traffic... it does that... the 80 over the Bay Bridge is really gnarly.

I am glad Lauren has performed so very well for you!!! Homeward bound!!!

Pictures still uploading.

6,281 miles. Two major problems:

1) The aforementioned surging and stalling in awful traffic outside of San Francisco.

2) The newly rebuilt passenger side door (less than a year old) degraded steadily (harder and harder to close) over the first part of the trip. Finally, in Ely, Nevada, it would not open from the outside at a gas station. I got the door open from the inside and a steel rod popped out of the door - sigh. We were able to use the manual door locks and the inside door handle for the rest of the trip, but the door will need to be fixed soon.

if that's all that happened, I would be pretty happy.

The surging? hm... heat related, I am betting. I am wondering if there is something amiss in the IAC or TPS.

Could be a suspect MAF, too.
