Yesterday, Bonham's Auction, as part of the Pebble Beach week, sold a 1962 Series 1 Ferrari 250 GTO.
This is the first time such a car has ever been offered at auction! It sold... for $38m. Hammered at $34m, with the juice, $38m. Read about the history here: http://www.bonhams.com/press_release/16940/ Damned sexy car... 250 means each of the 12 cylinders displaced 250cc, equally 3 litres. A brace of 6 Weber carbs and you have about 240hp. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it was more than enough back then!! 5spd manual trans... drum brakes, then to disks. And the prettiest body shapes to ever grace a frame. 39 total GTO's were made. Is any car worth this cash? Is any piece of art worth $100m? Both are valid questions, and both are answered by the fact that someone was willing to pay the freight, so they must be. I am glad my dream GTO is the mid-80s 288 GTO!!!! I think my dream GTO is a 65...with 3 dueces and a 4 speed...and a 389.....a little more in my price range....

Nick has a different set of perspectives on his GTO. He bought it way back on like 1974 or so, after Dark Side for about $20k USD (7500 PS) or so.
His has celebrity attached... and it is his legacy to his kids, if the Pink Floyd royalties ever dry up... yeah, right. As an aside, Gerry Rafferty had one international hit, Baker Street... he died a few years back from too much booze and other things... that stupid song was still paying him some $80k a year in royalties. Can you imagine the money that Pink Floyd still makes each year on their catalog? |
