I have to update my Avitar, unfortunately the Impala is long gone. It was a great car, unfortunately the police liked stopping it as much as I liked driving it so it didn't work out long term.

On an positive note, I purchased a 55 Chevy Bel Air this week!

Sadly, I have been so busy I haven't had been around the car in enough daylight to take any pictures since I purchased it. I have a day off Thursday, I will shoot a couple of pictures and post them online.

The car is pretty nice. Its a 55 2 door Sedan. I purchased it from its second owner in New Jersey. The second owner had it for about 2 years. The original owner was from Louisiana. The car needs paint but it is solid and best of all complete. Just about all the chrome trim is on the car and in good condition. Its a real Bel Air. It has a 235 inline 6, numbers matching. The six runs well but I have plans to swap in an eight. Will post pics on Thursday.

those 6's are hard to beat for smoothness, MPG and reliability... just a touch on the slow side. They will do highway speeds easily enough, just won't get there in a hurry.

I agree, a worked six would probably be pretty interesting. But in all honesty I have my heart set on a V8. I just feel like that's a V8 car. My goal is to try and build a very mild 406 and dress it up as close as possible to a 265. I am figuring if I can increase displacement I can keep drivability and still put down some decent power. I am going to rip out the powerglide also in favor of a 700r4.

If I was doing an automatic, I would avoid the 700R4... that 406 is going to produce a shit load of torque, and the 700R4 just can't take it.

4L80 is a much better option.

I agree with Andy. You will be doing custom fab anyway. Get a stand alone controller and you are good to go.

How 'bout a 4-holer with some 'sick' in it...

First motor I ever built FROM SCRATCH was an '81 CJ-7 w/OEM GM 2.5L Iron Duke. It was Frankenstein of auto industry (FROM THE DEALER), with parts from Jeep, AMC, GM (motor), Ford 4 spd tranny, etc., ... I think this was pre-Chrysler tho'.

I ground the crank, bored .030, head (1) shaved, header (1), carb was just under 500 cfm. Turning the 33" rubber on the corners wasn't too tough, and when I cut the transfer case to 4-hi, it was like torquing it to a V8 - except top end, even with the Borg Warner T5 was about 30mph.

Your going to hate me. I have a low mile LQ4 just sitting in the garage... but I am not going to use it. My plan is a 400 small block with a very mild cam. I want stock drivability but with wenough power for highway cruising and to light the tires up once in a while; and a 700R4 or 4L80.

I bet there's a fuel injection conversion kit for the 6...

How many HP does it take to break loose the rubber under that steel / iron machine?

I don't know about injection but I remember watching a 292 Chev with 3 Weber sidedrafts give the big blocks fits in the '70s on our local dirt tracks. Talk about a cool looking motor.
