Edit - videos:

Old headliner / pad removal:

I put a butter knife to the edge, CENTER of the rear, to get under it. Make sure to hold the knife flat on the edge, to not scratch...

Resized Image

Then you can get a hand in.

Resized Image

Once you get under the edge, ya' gotta' pull the fabric off of the panel with your fingers. Don't try to pull it by the edge of the foam board - the pad will break up.

Wear long sleeves!

Go all the way around the edge, then work toward the center.

Resized Image

(at this point, the edge DID break, and I had to go around the other way)

THis is the felt adhesive that I used for the new material. $5 @ Lowe's.

If your old painted top headliner foam is broken up too badly, you have a few options...

Mine was borderline. I took a mini-roller, and painted my OEM pad with water-based Acrylic Latex Black.

This does a few things: stops dust from coming through the new felt, re-enforces the borderline pad, and gives the felt adhesive a good bonding surface. A rattle can of Flat Black, or Clear Poly can will probably do a pretty good job as well. But the rolled-on water-based stuff gets INTO the OEM pad, for strength.

Another option for broken-up OEM pad is new pad. I don't know where, or how much.

A 3rd option would be to use the same double-layer styro board that I'm using for the glasstop removable screen. See below here...

Gluing the new felt into place:

Get the new felt centered. Flip back 1/2 of the new felt, and spread some adhesive onto the pad.

Resized Image

(DO NOT PRESS DOWN TOO HARD - THE ADHESIVE WILL COME THROUGH THE FELT)

Then flip it over, and repeat for the other half:

Glued into place.

Resized Image

This is some styro-board that I put additionally on my OEM pad, for strength, and to try to kill some exhaust drone in the interior;

Resized Image

After it dries, flip it, and cut excess material so that there's about 3" of overlap.

Dry-fit the overlap the rest of the way around. The forward corner concave curves are tricky, where the outline curves INWARD. I made 2 cuts in the apex of the concave curve, to about 3/8" of the edge (2nd edit - you need to cut to about 1/16" in the front concave corners - I got a buckle from not cutting close enough; see snappics posted below):

Second corner, cut and dry fit:

and the rest of the way dry-fit. You probably don't have to dry-fit with as much tape, but when GLUING the overlap, it might be a good thing.

Good write up, glad to have it here.

So far I have the emblem and the matching blank flip side. The material can be purchased at JoAnne Fabrics.

I still have to get the board. As we discussed in previous threads, I am considering doubling up the board to make a thicker headliner since I have a see through top as opposed to the fiberglass top that already has a headliner. I will post up as I progress.

Thanks there Matt; I would have edited the original thread, but 'Edit' post capability goes away after an hour. I'll need you or Andy to edit post 1 here with Y/T links, after the rest is uploaded there for Glasstop screen.

After dry-fit overlap, I used Black RTV to glue overlap. This is still the Painted Top headliner...

Once the RTV dries, felt glue onto the roof panel:

Now onto the removable screen assembly...

Removable screen assembly. Still working on videos to YouTube for this part...

Start with a paper template.

Printer paper under the edge of the glasstop frame, each piece taped together, and a few places taped TO the top, to hold it into place.

Resized Image

After going all the way around with the paper, trace the outline, and carefully remove the paper tracing. Put it aside for now.

Taping together styro foam board. This is shown in the first video...

2 pieces of styro next to each other. You're going to put 3 strips of tape across the joint, BINDING together, for strength. 3 strips within 24" of each other (approximate height of the top). Tape one piece TO THE JOINT, and raise the second styro board a few inches, and THEN press the tape across the joint, onto the second piece of styro. Let the second piece drop flat, and the tape will stretch and bind the joint together.

Repeat lifting for the 2 other strips of tape.

Resized Image

Now carefully flip the boards, and repeat the 3 strips tape on the back side. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO LIFT THE SECOND STYRO BOARD AS HIGH FOR TAPING THIS SIDE.

After getting 3 strips across the joint both sides, AND BEFORE CUTTING THE BOARD, get one strip of tape all the way around the board, over the joint (this snappic shows the boards already cut however). This really does strengthen the joint...

I don't know what I was thinkin' there Matt, when I said don't use hot glue. (that the problem - I WASN'T thinkin')

If you glue 2 sheets together, they're NOT too likely to curl TOWARDS each other ... DUH.

I'm still not at that point for the video yet here..........

Cut the styro boards with your paper template. This is more difficult than you might imagine...

After you've cut the paper template outline, tape the paper template to the styro board. Trace the line, and cut the first board, ABOUT 1/4" OUTSIDE OF THE TRACING, FOR 2 REASONS. 1) - The styro will bunch up, in front of even a single edge razor. It will take several passes to cut it, AND IT REQUIRES PATIENCE. I did it by first scoring the paper shell of the styro board, and then cutting progressively deeper, until the cut mark got to the back side of the board.

Resized Image

Once you get the first board cut, do a trial fit CAREFULLY into the glasstop frame. DO NOT PRESS IT ALL THE WAY INTO PLACE, because it will be difficult to remove without mangling it. Once in place (almost), you can get an idea where it will need sanding. I used 40-grit to take it down along the edge. Do not sand too much - you can always take more down later.

Repeat with the second board, again, not taking down too much on the high spots which hit the frame.

Once you're close, glue the 2 boards together. How you accomplish this might vary. Hot glue, Elmer's Glue, etc. I used the same TEC Felt Glue, that I'm using for the felt, since the paper shell of the styro board is porous like the felt.

Once the 2 boards are dried together, repeat the dry-fit into the glasstop frame....

Once you dry-fit the double-layer styro boards, you can sand down a little more around the edges, to make it fit more easily into the frame. YOU'LL IN FACT NEED TO DO THIS, because the felt wrapped around the edge will need a little real estate of its' own.

Now lay one headliner into the top. Drop in the 2-layer board, and re-check dry-fit. Remember that the wrapped-around felt needs a little more room inside the frame edge.

---------------------------------------

I'm putting a logo'd felt facing OUT, as well as in, so this part will vary just a little here...

For the top felt, facing out, I cut one headliner within 1/4" of the upper surface of the 2-layer board (the interior headliner will UNDERlap it, and won't be visible from outside).

For anyone who doesn't understand this....Chuck and I have been having some private PMs back and forth since I will be doing this project, as well. I suggested hot gluing the boards together for more strength.

Funny - I don't even understand my stuff too, till I read it and look at my snappics again!

Anyway, second video is uploadin' now here.

And while waitin' for that, a little more write-up here...

We left off checking dry-fit of the 2 bare layers, glued together, in the glasstop. They'll be slightly smaller than the rubber liner inside the frame, which is fine. Once you wrap one headliner's excess over the 2x layer, it will fill the space, and probably give enough tension to hold it in place. Whether or not you want to have some securing tab / velcro / etc. holding it into place is personal preference. I think it will be fine, even bumpy road or 'spirited driving.

Once they 2x layer board is dry fit, lay a headliner inside the glasstop. Orientation doesn't matter just now. Then, drop in the 2x layer board. You should have to really press it into place. If not, you might be looking at velcro etc.

Remove what you have.

I'm going with a second logo'd headliner facing OUT through the tinted top. There's enough tint that I (and some others who commented), didn't think it would be over the top tacky / busy.

Here's the mock-up again:

Thanks to Matt there for the video embed.

There's probably LOTS of room for improvement here; if anyone has ideas on it, lets hear it...

The curing Felt Glue DID make each layer of the styro curl APART (although not to the point that it's un-workable). I think it did this since I used more of the glue to hold the felt TO the 2x layer board, than I used to hold the 2 boards TOGETHER.

I was thinking of running tape around the exterior edges of the board. That might prevent that.

Well that looks trick.

Mine I was able to peel off the foam without removing it from the top. I was afraid it'd just crumble.

Then I very gently scraped off whatever loose glue/fabric pieces were still on it.

Then sprayed 3M adhesive on it, (they have two different strengths).

Then put my new fabric in place, being careful not to stretch or wrinkle it.

Then cut the edges about 3/4" overlapping the roof frame.

Then tucked it all in carefully with an old credit card. There were a few areas that it didn't want to tuck easily, maybe due to factory overglue of the foam or fiberglass. But it all went in, looks great, still 5+ years later.

Being able to remove the top sure makes it easy.

Using credit card is a good idea CC. I thought of it to put one of these headliners ON TOP OF a good OEM headliner, that doesn't sag...

ed.: Matt? How's the install coming along there?
