failed relay, poor connection at one of the relays, or poor connection at the MAF sensor itself.

Does this cover it.
Have a new MAF sensor in it

yes... the older C4s are prone to wire failure... the insulation pretty much sucked.

order both relays on amazon for $25. Will be here tomorrow. Someone mentioned that when you replace the MAF it is recommended you replace the relays at the same time.

Don't know if this is true. Will see if this is the answer tomorrow.

Steve - donno where you are getting your MAF's from, but RockAuto.com has them for $180.00, reman'd AC Delco, plus core...

Less 5% with this code: D0499A8E6B7458

There are other options, but this looks like the best bet.

Tested my MAF on a friends 87 vet he pulled no codes. Put his on mine still came back 36.
Messed with wires cleaned plug. No go. I start by clearing code. Will start up and run all day with no code. Shut it off re start and the code comes back up. I have already replaced the relays.
Will have a new plug here Friday. I wasn't going to pay 50 bucks from CARQUEST.

Just because you replaced the relays doesn't mean they are good. Did you save the old relays?

Also, code 36 relates to the burn off circuit which happens when you start the car, that's why the light triggers on restart. I would focus on that circuit. Break out the FSM.

Both good information. When I have time I will look into the possible solution I have never thought of.

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/f ... relay-sockets-issues.html

The quick fix was to remove the socket and attach a female spade connector to each wire and slide them on to the proper relay blade individually. It has now been 4 months and over 20,000 miles with no issue. The only problem now is where do I get new sockets? I don't want to get ones from a salvage yard that are well on their way to developing this same issue - See more at: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/f ... html#sthash.dEo6CPep.dpuf

FSM probably says to plug in a jumper wire SOMEwhere, to trigger duty cycle, THEN test for power to MAF, and ground FROM MAF, before anything else...

Connectors are still available from GM. Call Chris May at Superior Chevy, 1.800.728.8267 and tell him I sent you. That was a very common connector... GM used it on many MAF sensors over many car lines.

The socket mentioned is referring to the relay socket. I have never looked for one, not sure if they are available or not.

This is the downside to these early C4's... the harness wasn't updated until 1990.

It is going to require some chasing. Also, trace back grounds.

Be willing to pull apart the black split loom stuff. There is a chance the wires have chaffed inside the loom and are ground each other out.

FWIW, when my MAF failed on my 85, the car would sputter trying to start but would not catch. It didn't run long enough to even throw a code. Note the 85 MAF is different than later years, so probably not worth much.

I replaced the maf with a reman autozone unit, and it was either the same or no fire at all, can't remember.

The 2nd replacement MAF though fixed it. Very frustrating to have new parts be bad, makes diagnosis a bitch.

An import I worked on with a bad MAF would only crank, nothing else.

Do you have the FSM flow chart?

On step 2 the light comes on when engine running. It also clicks on and off for a second when key is in turned with out engine running. Should both lights be on with out engine running. Now that I changed plugs at burnoff relay my code reader will not connect.

Joel,

Yes... early C4's have a tendency to eat underhood wiring.

Heat... chemicals... vapours... take your pick, all conspire to eat insulation. It shrinks, cracks, chafes.

Once that happens, shorts are very possible.

Congrats on fixing it Steve!!! That's a killer find!!

Yea Andy, I'm aware of the wire problem on most early 80's GM products. I've re-wired many over the years, some easy and some not so easy. I was just curious what the exact problem was causing the code 36.

Now my friend at his shop has been told that on 87 c4 there is a problem in the prom that causes these vehicle to throw intermittent 36 codes and flashing the prom will fix it with the proper informatiom. Never heard of it. Tomorrow I am having him call Alvin of PMC of NC to see if they have heard of this problem. I trust them as they have done a great job on tuning my vet for all of it's up grades
