My window of time for preparing the house for the party is closing fast. Outside work is mostly done.(Patio and yard. Starting inside today. Office is getting a once over and the laundry room if I can get to it. I have to go to the vet, pay bills with a few other routine tasks squeezed in. Let the fun begin. (If you want to call that fun.)

God morgon!

I was on the phone quite a while yesterday with some long-lost relatives who have been looking for us for years. The're descendants of my great-grandmother's brother's family, and they're trying to fill in all the missing pieces of their family tree. I'm not much of a genealogy buff, but it's like anything else on the internet - you can burn an hour or two real easy. Anyway, it was interesting to chat with them, and a nice diversion after watching the Viqueens squander another lead.

Tommy, do we have to bring our own chairs?

Have a good day, Gurus!

Good morning gang.

Welcome to winter.

Hope Letty is feeling better today. We put up our tree over the weekend and it looks good. Just a small one table top tree.

If it isn't one thing it's another. I now have to put a clutch slave cylinder in the car. No big deal just that I get one vehicle fixed and now have to work on another. I can't complain though it only has 104K on the clock before failure. That will get fixed in the spring or sooner depending on the job future. I have applied for a position at the company that is taking our work away and with some luck will here something in January.

On with today.

Word of the Day Monday, December 22, 2014

rubricate\ ROO-bri-keyt \, verb;

1. to mark or color with red.

2. to furnish with or regulate by rubrics.

Origin:

Rubricate came to English in the mid-1500s from the Latin rūbrīcāre meaning "to color red."

Today is NATIONAL DATE NUT BREAD DAY

National Date Nut Bread Day is celebrated each year on December 22 and by some sources also on September 8.

Dates

Believed to have originated around Iraq, dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years. They have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE.

The Spaniards introduced dates into Mexico and California in 1765.

Dates provide essential nutrients and are a very good source of dietary potassium. In ripe dates, the sugar content is about 80% with the remainder consisting of protein, fiber and trace elements of boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, manganese, selenium and zinc.

Nuts

Many nuts are good sources of vitamins E and B2 and are also rich in protein, folate fiber and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper and selenium.

Several studies have shown that those who consume nuts on a regular basis are less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease. (CHD) It was in 1993 that nuts were first linked to protections against CHD. Since that time, many clinical trials have found that consumption of various nuts such as almonds and walnuts can lower serum LDL cholesterol concentrations.

Add the two, dates and nuts, into the mix when making a loaf of quick bread and you will end up with a delicious treat.

NATIONAL DATE NUT BREAD DAY HISTORY

Within our research, we could not find the creator of National Date Nut Bread, an “unofficial” national holiday.

FOREFATHERS’ DAY

Forefathers’ Day is a holiday celebrated in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on December 22. It is a commemoration of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on December 21, 1620. It was introduced in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1769.

Forefathers Day is celebrated every year by the Old Colony Club, established in 1769 “to honor the forefathers”. The celebration begins at 6:00 AM with a march by members to the top of Cole’s Hill next to Massasoit’s statue, followed by a reading of a proclamation honoring the forefathers and a ritual firing of the club’s cannon.

The Old Colony Club and the Mayflower Society both include a succotash dinner as part of their celebration. Sauquetash was recorded as a part of the first Thanksgiving. Unlike later versions of succotash, in Plymouth succotash is served as a broth containing large pieces of fowl and meat that are sliced at the table.
When the 22nd falls on a Sunday, the Old Colony Club celebrates Forefathers Day on the following Monday.

There is some good-hearted dispute between the Old Colony Club and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. The simple fact of the celebration falling on separate days permits members of both societies to participate in both celebrations. In adjusting the date to the Gregorian calendar, the anniversary was erroneously established on December 22 instead of December 21.

Oh no. Hellcat Crash. How long can it be before the safety gurus are calling for a ban on high hp cars? It could result in future Hellcats pushing a whopping 77 hp. Do you remember 180 hp Corvettes?

Safety percentage manipulators disclosed the other day and reported Florida #1 in marine accidents. Really? Could it be because watersports happen year round in Florida? It's also near the top of the list of vessels owned per capita. Goofy science.

Hey guys.....was up early and went to the county health dept (Rosie is the administrator), today was the day they handed out Christmas baskets to the low income people of the community. All morning was spent putting the baskets together and delivering them to the shut-ins who can't get out. My daughter and the three boys were here to help. It's good for them to do this type of service. This afternoon, we spent handing them out the the rest of the people came in to pick them up. It was a long day, but I'm glad I got to help. We don't always have the opportunity, as sometimes we are still in school when she has it scheduled. It just worked out this year.

I hope Letty is doing OK today, it's been a real bummer for her recently. Still thinking about you Letty.

RIP, Joe. Quite a unique voice.

8 years ago, I was spreading out some newspaper to do some painting, and I happened to notice an ad for a Joe Cocker concert at one of the local casinos. He'd always been a favorite, and I'd never seen him live, so I called some friends and we decided to order tickets. I didn't expect much - he was 62 at the time. I was completely floored from the first note, he just knocked it out of the park. I thought most of the covers he did were better than the originals - he never failed to put his own stamp on those songs.

I got my old new computer today. It's in excellent shape cosmetically and has been wiped clean so I get to start from scratch. It has Word, Excel, Power Point and a few other programs loaded. DVD plays. Just a clean machine overall. Seeing as I'm a laptop novice it should be fun to learn. First thing is get some security. Have a good'n.
