Anyone done one already? Any insight would be helpful :-)

I will pull the trigger in mid summer, shopping to find a set of budget LS3 heads and do a cam and head swap cause the stock heads alone are worth 30 HP

Likely candidate= 228/230 112 camshaft, BTR dual springs with steel retainers, BTR pushrods, Fel-Pro gaskets and seals, GM crank bolt, ARP cam gear bolts, New Roller Bearings for the Rockers, New timing gear and chain

Good thing you're keeping it stock.

Chris Franks in Texas has a few straight up monster CNC Programs for the GM LS3 cyl heads. Start at $1400 complete with the BTR platinum spring package. He dosen't post alot of info publically about them but.....

If I were building an LS3, He's the guy I'd use.

EXXXXAAAACCCCTTTTLLLY what I tell my wife, I am using STOCK LS3 Heads that came on the STOCK 2008-2013 cars, and an LS3 cam,, sort of.

OK, I'm busted, I am really tired of modding my sons Toyota Tacoma, we installed new wheels & tires, & smoked headlights with HID 6k headlights and LED smoked rear tail lamps, and a new Blue Tooth stereo,,, and we even did some Plasti Dip,ing if that's a word. My wife loves the bonding and teaching part and i just love doing stuff, did I mention I have A.D.D?

Well I am not certain that I have but I have some kind of Compulsive Doing Stuff Disorder, I might have even pioneered this disorder :-)

Back to the subject at hand,,, I will watch the junk yards for a set of LS3 heads for the $500 range and I can have them ported locally by Mike Stark @ CFM performance, he ported my Dart 215's and my AFR 210's and my Superram.

I helped my buddy install his new cam and heads on his 06 / C6 with a supercharger so although the C6/LS platform is very different than a C4/L98 engine, its all straight forward, with a lot of O-ring seals instead of Cork gaskets and Right Stuff.

So, I will sit patiently :-) and watch for LS3 heads to come my way, cause I know they will :-0

Stay away from the LS3 heads (IMO). They are problematic, plagued by oiling issues. I am not sure if they are even compatible with the old blocks, but I am sure you've already checked that.

If you're going to port them anyway, stick with the 243 casting.

I did a cam swap on my car. For years I was told by others how hard and scientific it was. Once I got down to the nuts and bolts it was actually pretty easy and a lot of fun. A couple of really good tips if I may: work slowly and make sure you torque everything back to spec. Clean the cam really well before installing it (I made this rookie mistake, thought the shipping oils were some sort of cam coating and installed the cam without cleaning it. it worked out OK for me, guess i got lucky), Make sure you have a huge breaker bar to break off the crank pulley bolt, and work slowly installing the cam so you don't nick the bearings.

Good luck

You can do a cam in an LS without pulling the heads. I've done it in a Saturday afternoon, although I did the opposite, pulled out the high HP cam and put in a stocker. Stupid class HP limits...

Hardest part is shifting the rack out of the way.

On my C4 I took welding wire and suspended the lifters and pulled the cam.

I will pin the new Trickflow Damper, new push rods, Comp Cams Double Valve Springs for .650", replace the trunnion bearings in the Rockers, and maybe replace the timing chain, we'll see when it comes out.

Cam specs below
