Good morning and happy new year gang.

Well back to work. I enjoyed my Christmas break. Like Tommy said earlier in the weekend, house is back to normal.

We have cold weather here today temps in the single digits and should reach the mid teens today with snow coming tonight.

Let's get the day and year started shall we.

Word of the Day Monday, January 05, 2015

rallentando \rah-luh n-tahn-doh\ adjective

1.slackening; becoming slower (used as a musical direction).

Origin of rallentando

Rallentando is the Italian gerund of the word rallentare, which means "to slow down."

Today is NATIONAL BIRD DAY

Nature lovers, bird lovers and bird watchers across the country annually celebrate National Bird Day on January 5.

National Bird Day is one of several designated “holidays” celebrating birds.

National Bird Day

Born Free USA emphasizes the importance of National Bird Day and lists it as a day to shine a spotlight on issues critical to the protection and survival of birds, both captive and wild.

National Bird Day, an “unofficial” national holiday, was created to promote avian awareness.

According to Born Free USA, nearly 12 percent of the world’s almost 10,000 bird species are in danger of extinction.

Celebrated annually by half a million adherents through:
◦bird-watching
◦studying birds
◦educating others
◦other bird-related activities
◦A particularly important National Bird Day activity is bird adoption. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper article, many bird enthusiast celebrate by adopting birds on this day and educating future bird owners about the special issues involved with taking care of birds, including the “proper care, cleanup, noise and biting, feeding, diet and their need for daily interaction”.

Other annual Bird Day holidays:

Bird Day – May 4

Established in 1894 by Oil City, Pennsylvania school superintendent Charles Babcock. The first holiday in the United States dedicated to the celebration of birds. Babcock’s intention in creating this day was to advance bird conservation as a moral value.

International Migratory Bird Day
Second Saturday in May in U.S. and Canada – second Saturday in October in Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Originated by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and coordinated by Environment for the Americas. A conservation initiative bringing awareness on conserving migratory birds and their habitats throughout the Western Hemisphere. Dedicated to international conservation efforts and environmental education in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Bird Day in the United Kingdom
Started in 1979

Coordinated by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, up to half a million bird lovers annually spend an hour counting birds on “Bird Day”.

World Migratory Bird Day
Second Saturday in May

The United Nations established World Migratory Bird Day in 2006.

There are approximately 10,000 species of birds.

For more information on National Bird Day, see:

NATIONAL WHIPPED CREAM DAY

There is that little something that adds a final touch to ice cream sundaes, cake, milk shakes, hot cocoa, pie, pudding and many other desserts and it is annually celebrated on January 5. This is National Whipped Cream Day.

This holiday falls on the birthday of Reddi-wip founder Aaron “Bunny” Lapin. Aaron who invented Reddi-wip in 1948, was born on January 5, 1914 and died on July 10, 1999.

National Whipped Cream Day celebrates whipped cream’s contribution to the dessert world.

Often sweetened and sometimes flavored with vanilla, coffee, chocolate, orange and other flavors, whipped cream is also sometimes called Chantilly cream orcreme Chantilly.

Recipes from the 16th century included whipped cream that was sweetened and aromatised. The names “milk snow” and “snow cream” were used. In these recipes, naturally separated cream is whipped, typically with willow or rush branches, then the resulting foam on the surface would from time to time be skimmed off and drained, which was a process taking an hour or more.

The English name “whipped cream” found it’s beginning in 1673. The name “snow cream” continued to be used throughout the 17th century.

To celebrate National Whipped Cream Day, try one of the following “tried and true” recipes:

HAPPY NATIONAL WHIPPED CREAM DAY!

NATIONAL WHIPPED CREAM DAY HISTORY

Within our research, we were unable to find the creator of National Whipped Cream Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

NATIONAL THANK GOD IT’S MONDAY DAY

National Thank God It’s Monday Day is celebrated each year on the first Monday in January. This day was created to celebrate all things that start/happen on a Monday in the the upcoming year, such as; a new job, a promotion, birthdays, holidays, vacations and etc. This is also a day, which starts out the first full week of the new year, to look ahead with positive hope, energy, enthusiasm and excitement for all things to come in the next 12 months.

Our research failed to find the creator and the origin of National Thank God It’s Monday Day, an “unofficial” holiday.

Kapu bœthaynga!

Today is for the birds, indeed. By the time I got a mile from home, the car thermometer was reading a balmy -12. I'm not sure at what temperature nose hair freezes, but -12 is somewhat colder than that. I saw a highway patrol sitting off to the side of the road waiting to catch someone speeding. Perhaps it would've been nice if instead he had gone to help the poor bastard whose old truck was limping down the shoulder with its flashers on, making unnatural noises. Meanwhile, the grindstone calleth.

Bundle up, Gurus!

So you stopped and helped him in your warm, new truck?

I got here to school, as I pulled up it is surprisingly quiet....no other cars here, huuuum. Well I am early, they'll show up soon. 8 am, nobody else here. So I look at the calendar, it says "No School" (which I knew there would be no students), but it says nothing about teacher work day. Crap, I came in for nothing........ Well, I did have one of my drafting students call me last night asking if I could help him with a couple of drawing that are due first thing in the morning, I told him I was going to be here anyway, come on in. So I waited for him to come in so I could help him. I just finished with him, so I have written a letter of recommendation to the scholarship board for another student, that needs to be in by end of the month. So my morning hasn't been a total loss.

CLEAR AND COLD THIS MORNING, 20 DEGREES, BUT THE SUN IS SHINING AND THERE IS LITTLE WIND SO THERE IS HOPE FOR THE DAY. THE CHEROKEES ARE GLAD TO SEE SUNSHINE AGAIN.

GOT A HOST OF ERRANDS TO RUN TODAY, GOOD THING THE BUMBLEBEE'S HEATER IS WORKING AGAIN, THE TRUCK IS IN THE SHOP.

AS HIGHWAY COPS GO, OKLAHOMA'S ARE TOPS. BACK WHEN I HAD FAMILY TO VISIT IN SURROUNDING STATES EVERY HIGHWAY PATROLMAN YOU'D SEE WAS WRITING A TICKET. IN OK, 3 OUT OF 5 WOULD HAVE THEIR HEAD IN SOMEBODIES ENGINE COMPARTMENT OR CALLING A TOW FOR A BREAKDOWN, OR HELPING SOME OLD LADY GET A TIRE CHANGED. AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY SHOULD BE DOING. OHP IS OK! (EXCEPT WHEN THEY WRITE YOU A TICKET :-)

My ex- the cop - use to tell me he wasn't bothering anyone with a ticket unless they were just showing their ass that bad - otherwise, he was simply making a presence - to help control things, being there if he was needed, on call for what was needed and if a motorist needed help he'd be there - he was not a fan of cold or rain or excessive heat.
speaking of cold - it's freezing here - 22 out - the truck's thermometer on the mirror simply said ICE - by the time I got to work it finally told me it was 22. Tomorrow night it's supposed to be 10 with a high of not much more. I'm not made for this mess, but at least the sun is out - although that's almost discouraging - you see that and wanna get out but then you do and you freeze and run back inside.
I'm still visualizing Brad's frozen nosehair....

Good morning, Gurus! I think I've managed to free up my schedule a bit for 2015, so I'm hoping to be out here more to chat!

Yay for whipped cream. I think I need to make some hot chocolate now.

I don't recall ever showing up for work when we were closed, but I did accidentally book plane tickets and hotel, and went on a business trip a day early. I had also arranged for travel for my boss, and was wondering why I didn't see him on the flight. When I got to my destination and waited around in the terminal, and he wasn't there, I finally called the office, and they were like, uhhhh, that's tomorrow. D'oh!

Picked up the mail and my order from Rock Auto was here....I just ordered it Saturday! Anyway, I brought the new plugs and plug wires to school and proceeded to change them out. The pickup, while we were in KC developed a little miss at idle. No codes set, but there was definitely a miss. So I ordered plugs and wires. All went well, pretty easy for a modern engine, just the back one on the passenger side caused any trouble. It took longer for that one plug than rest of them, about 25 minutes
