I got my 86 L98 convertible out of winter storage recently, driven it a few short trips in it and it's run fine except one day I got a SES but I had a stop to make and the SES was out when I restarted and didn't reoccur on multiple short trips. Didn't check it at the time of the SES as my scanner was buried away and the light hadn't come back.

Today I went to take it out, almost immediately it was surging and not idling well and the SES light came on again, so pulled back into the garage and dug out the scanner and found a DTC41 code (it's an ODBC1 car).
First item on the list is cam sensor failure, walking the diag tree in the FSM on intermittents list possible poor or loose connections.

Problem is I can't find that sensor in the manual nor can I find anything online referring to it other than apparently it exists. I want to check it out but I need to know what it looks like and where it is.
Can anyone help me out?

Also if you had a DTC41 on a L98 and it was something else, can you let me know what that was and what fixed it?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Paul

No such thing as a cam sensor on an L98.
A few times I came across a code 41, was always the ECM.

Ecm or prom from what I can tell. Apparently can be caused by a bad signal from distributor to ecm.

Do you have an aftermarket chip or a tune?

If you had one of the DTC41's assuming it's ECM related, did it come and go or was it on continuous once it started?
I ask because I just went out and ran it a little while, no SES and ran perfect again (haven't done a thing to it since reading the code). I would think if it was a fail it would happen all the time, not some of the time. I'm thinking it's poor grounds or connections if it comes and goes.

Your thoughts?

It got worse over a period of time. First occasionally the light with no effect at all, than some performance loss and rough idle.
Using it as a daily driver it took about 2 weeks until it shut down the engine by itself for the first time.

Woodstock, appreciate the info. I've had some poor ground issues but now need to plan for worse.

Thanks everyone.

May have solved this one and a couple of other ones today. It may have been a battery disconnect I bought last year. Spend some time today cleaning up what I could get to and didn't make a difference. Then I checked my notes and looks like some started last fall after I'd added the disconnect so I took it out.

Now all I have is the one light - the abs and that was going on and off from the day I bought the car. Still have to open that up and clean up the grounds etc on it.

Just passing the info along in case it might be involved with someone else having a problem.

Well I took her out a couple of times yesterday and today, no drivability issues at the moment, so that battery cutoff may truly have been the issue. Running like it should. ABS light even has not been coming on these times so hoping it's solved though I still want to clean up more of the grounds in it before I'm done.

I like the idea of a battery cutoff so I ordered a watertight one from Summit that I'll be putting on later. This one lists it will cover 250 amps so I'm thinking that should cover anything I'll ever put through it.

Which Module 41?

Does yours have 1, 4, 7 Modules?

I'm assuming that's on newer models (ODB2). This one's a ODB1 and all you get is a DTC 41.

Hopefully it's gone but there was a trend I figured out: below 30 degrees out, happened in the first 6 blocks or so after first startup. Happens right around the time the car goes from fast idle to normal.
My mechanic still thinks it originated in the maf or iac. May let him take a crack at it regardless as it's always worrisome to wonder if it will happen again.
