The 89 was in need of some new brakes so I decided to add a little bit of shiny stuff. I could have bought basic blank rotors and pads but I wanted it to look a little nicer. I don't track my car or anything like that so I am not worried about the internet over-exaggeration of drilled rotors cracking if you look at them sideways.

What I bought was a set of Powerstop drilled and slotted rotors with the Z3 ceramic pads. I got a nice deal on Rockauto with a combination of our coupon code and a factory rebate. Total was just under $250 shipped. Not bad.

So here is the old stuff:

Stock rear brake setup:

Previous C5 upgrade in the front:

I bought these Russell speed bleeders a while back but never installed them:

I've seen confusion on what size to buy, but this is the comparison for the C5 bleeders:

And for the C4 rear:

The C5 pads were certainly worn down:

Old vs new:

New rotor mounted:

With calipers and pads mounted:

Looks good through the spoked rims:

I also used the new speed bleeders to bleed the system. Wow. It was so simple. You just crack the bleeder 1/4-1/2 turn, hook up your tube/bottle, and pump the brake pedal. That's it. The check ball inside prevents any air from getting back in. Super fast and easier than dealing with the vacuum pump. I highly recommend these if you bleed your system often.

After that I took it out to bed in the brakes. After the bedding process, I was impressed with the stopping power. I was even able to get the ABS to lock up which I haven't been able to do since I changed my MC to the Camaro setup (more rear bias). The only problem I had was one of the anti rattle clips was bent in too close to the rotor and rubbing. I had to take the caliper back off and bend it out of the way, but that was pretty quick. The pad mounting hardware included with the Powerstop kit was good quality, this just seemed to be a fluke.

So I only have a few miles on the rotors and pads so I can't comment on the durability, but my first impression is very good and I certainly like the appearance much better.

Well-done! Indeed, the speed bleeders make it easy.

It's interesting how GM didn't use all the surface area of the 88+ rear rotor.

My stock anti rattle clips in back are long gone, I never noticed honestly. My speedbleeders were also getting a little corroded and worn so I installed Earl's bleeders this time. These are the one with the external spring and check valve. I haven't done a bleed yet so who knows. The russell type ones always bugged me because they'd always find a way to pull air in through the threads no matter despite trying to seal them. The Earl's in theory prevent that.

The rear pads are pretty small.

I don't believe the 89 has any anti rattle clips in the back. They are held down by a spring on the top of the pad. The box had some thin H shaped piece of metal with the pads but I couldn't figure out what it was for. Maybe cross platforms? The old ones didn't have it so neither do the new ones.

As far as the speedbleeders, you can buy extra sealant on the website, but I can't figure it's any better than using something like ARP or whatever you have laying around once it's time to replace the sealant on the threads.
