Driving my 94 the other day and the SYS kept flashing beside the speedometer- what is it and can I pull a code? I have a Snap On and Tech II scan tool but could not find anything there?

The SYS can flash for any number of reasons... Battery voltage being one... a bad ground for the IP or CCM...

If you ever see the SYS light on AND the SES light on at the same time, drive straight home and do not shut off the engine until the car is parked!

This means, more then likely, that the PCM has lost comms with the CCM. And when that happens, the car will not restart.

A note, just saying... if you get a SYS flash AND the SES comes on, I can promise you that you have a C41 - loss of serial communications - meaning both UARTs have taken a shit.

In my case, if I did have a SYS code, I can't see them without the screen; I would need to hook up my laptop.

What are UARTs?

It's most likely an easy fix for you and your L98.
99% your ECM is toast. Since your 90 and 91 use the same ECM, just switch it over and most likely the code is gone and culprit found.

Here's the problem. The 91 is a Crate 383 stroker with a ProCharger supercharger and a MSD ignition box. Still a plug and play? Just change the card with it? I'm suddenly suspect of the battery by the way. I'm gonna have to have it tested even though it's supposed to be brand new, it isn't acting right. Also I charged the car up to capacity the other day. It was dead within a week. The shop looked for possible drains/breaks and checked the grounds. No issues found and it maintained a charge at the shop. I'm willing to look for and pick up an ECM and keep it as a spare if it's not the culprit. Time will tell and I'll post any conclusions.

Certainly gaining traction here. I might just have to throw a part at it. Going to go check the p/n in the morning and see about rounding one up.

Once again, thanks, Axel.

I am pretty certain you just have a different chip in your 383, which is removable. Loosen the 3 10mm nuts holding the ECM in the bracket and turn it around. You'll see a cover held by 4x 1/4° screws. Underneath that cover is the memcal/chip, that you just swap over and you are ready to try with the ECM you already have.

What are UARTs?

Universal Asynchronous Receive/Transmit.

They are communications chips.

Changed out the ecm with a used unit and swapped memcal/chip. No changes. Same .........

Do you still got code 41?
I'd take a look at the fuses, especially ECM and CCM. No juice no joy.
If it's not a known good ECM, try your other ECM. You know how easy the swap is.
Good luck.

I'll recheck the fuses and do as you suggest. It's worth a shot.

Took the ECM from the 90 and transplanted the chip. Same negative results. Fuses were OK. It's going on the flatbed soon. Could well be CCM related. I'll report back with future findings.

Try the 90 ECM with the 90 Chip.
Once I had a chip that didn't burn right and I got a code 41.
With a stock chip the 383 should run richer. For a start and short idle action you should be safe.

Here is the latest. The ECM and CCM were both showing power. My current mechanic called my old mechanic, Kent, and Kent said he has never had to replace a CCM for failure. Somehow the shop ended up finding a fusible link that was hanging by a thread. This link I was told has to do with the injectors and fuel pump receiving power from the PCM. I'll update further when it's up and running.
