Does that mean that I don't have to pay for it when it screws up?

Ok, but they'll need an Atari 2600 joystick to read what's on mine.

"If an exemption is granted and mechanics and car enthusiasts could make any modifications they wanted to software, Jacqueline Charlesworth, general counsel for the Copyright Office, said she found it "troubling" potential buyers of used cars could be left unaware of what changes were made."
I'm guessing Jacqueline has never change the wheels on her car, let alone the engine tune. |

(At the finish of writing my post, I realized it's probably more about selling licenses to alter/service software than it is about stopping it.) This was my 1st thought when I read the title of the thread. I didn't read the Full article, but are they claiming rights to cars that were bought before the disclaimer was added to the sales contracts? That could be very well contestable in court, Imo. Now here's a question. As hot rodding progresses and integrates the new OEM systems get integrated and retrofitted into early iron, who sez we hafta use their software? For that matter, why not remove their stuff and go full aftermarket (as products emerge) on new iron as well? As for our older rides, who's to stop us from removing their software and using aftermarket products? Their whole claim is based upon using their software. I doubt it'll include the wiring. Plug in something you wanna use and send the old chit back to them. Collect. |
