The speaker covers on the dash of my 1985 are in good shape—the only problem is that they have faded to a medium blue.

Has anybody dyed theirs back to the original black? If so, what did you use and how pleased were you with the final result?

Get the dye from the guys just north of Harrisburg - Corvette America. (I'll be getting a complete interior from them for the 67).

They do have it in spray cans, shooting it with a gun is better but.........

Assuming that you're removing the grills:

Prep is the key.

1. Clean them with full strength Simple Green, soft rags and a soft toothbrush. Hot water rinse.

2. Do this at least 3 times.

3. Remove ant left over SG with Dawn (a big squirt in a qt. of hot water) , hot water rinse.

This will remove any Armor All, etc.

If there's no scratches, don't sand them.

If you do get the dye in a spray can, do a test spray on a piece of cardboard covered with alum foil or Clingwrap (the cardboard by itself absorbs the paint too fast).

Start with the rattle can TWO FEET away from the surface and spray one stroke to fog on a coat.

After the appropriate flash time, spray another coat from 1 1/2 feet a bit heavier.

See how that looks on your test board.

The grills must be done this way.

You won't need the adhesion promoter that C/A sells, just the dye.

2 light coats

3 and/or 4th coat should look wet when sprayed (hold the can no less that 1 ft. away.

If the 3rd coat looks good - stop.

Most guys who mess this up hold the spray cans too close and put on too much paint. Fogging on the first 2 coats really helps.

It's the same, Matt. My references agree that they were the same from 1984 to 1989.

In that case I believe Bill's advice was for a plastic speaker cover.

There are spray dyes available at the fabric stores. You can also buy new speaker grill fabric there pretty cheap.

I did mine.

Carefully cut the glue at the lower edge (hidden below dash level) and removed and dyed the fabric.

In hindsight I could have just stuck the whole thing in the pot, plastic and all. I don't know how the old plastic would hold up to boiling water.

I used Rit dye. It took a few rounds of cooking to get them looking black instead of blue. Within 5 years they looked blue again.

*sigh*

My car was bose, the dash plates were solid plastic, but still had the molding for mounting a 4x6 underneath. Actually I remember I removed the fabric so I could cut holes for tweeters.
