We were taking Lauren to a car show in Ephrata (not far from Lancaster) that we'd been invited to. Got about ten miles out and started to hit very heavy and slow traffic, even for Friday evening. Temperatures started to climb, engine started to labor—not good.

At about 14 miles, she stalled. Hard start, stall. Hard start, stall. Then—no start. A nice young man in a Subaru wagon pushed us off the road into a convenient parking lot—and refused to take any money.

I let the engine cool down a little and tried to start it again. No start, just ugly bangs from the engine—could be backfire, could be something else.

In the battle of Hagerty versus AAA road service, AAA won. A flatbed with a competent, personable driver showed up within 35 minutes. Lauren looked achingly beautiful in the gathering darkness as he loaded her up. We took her to County Corvette in West Chester, PA, only 8 miles away. They have instructions to figure out what is wrong (perhaps today) and then I'll figure out what I'm going to do.

I was a mess—Ivelis was, of course, wonderful. We ended up doing about half of the things we had planned for the weekend, but we drove Grace.

At this point, I'm not inconsolable; I'm more of a combination of angry and sad. The reality for me is that I don't do garage queens—I want to drive the car. I'm not asking for it to be as reliable as Grace or Louis, but, if I can't count on this car to do a couple of a hundred miles for a weekend trip, then I'll find a car that can.

Lauren is no spring chicken and sooner or later something quits or breaks and then you get it fixed and its good to go again......time and money will fix a lot of problems.......in my thinking you have the best 85 in the country now and know what you have done to it..........any other car and you would be starting over..........it will fix.

So very sorry to hear.

It sounds like a bad case of L98-itis...

But that's an 85, not a aluminum head engine.

What you are describing could be:

* cylinder locked - hydrolocked. This is when too much coolant fills a cylinder and things stop in a hurry. Caused by a bad head gasket. Checking the motor oil will answer this - is it milky or still oily?

* Spun a bearing... oil pressure ok before it died?

If you go to rebuild it, I would pull the 700R4 and rebuild it, too. You are approaching the mileage threshold.

I have a feeling this is a rebuild level failure. I hate to say it, but I think it's true.

To have a shop to the entire job, sourcing parts, doing the machine work and assembly and such, and a few enhancements I would recommend, plus the trans, you are looking at not much change from $6~$7k...

Holy jumping to conclusions, Batman. It could be as simple as a fuel pump. Let the diagnostics occur, first.

Here is the problem I ALWAYS run into. If you decide to unload a non running vehicle you will take a serious beating on the price. If you get it running you'll have too much into it to sell it. How do you think we got our stable? I hate taking a loss and it's not a loss as long as it's in my driveway. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the official report and repair estimate. Andy is just saying what he's saying because if it were him, it would be true.

I am always a firm believer in fixing.

If it's a good car, well cared for, keep it up. It's better than letting a nice ride rot somewhere.

Good, clean C4s are getting rare... preserving them is a good thing and should be done.

You cannot buy another car for that money, that you KNEW was going to be durable for the years to come. If you keep it for 10 more years, that would work out to only a few hundred dollars a year, you can't do that on car payment.

They worked on it for a good part of the day, mostly trying to replicate the condition. The early but not definite diagnosis is fuel pump.

I do miss my '96.. put a lot into it, sold it locally, 25-year old dude trashed it - then sold it to another lady. She aint' no better with it - I do see it driving around some. Had 248,xxx on it when sold. Was a great car. But I hydrolocked it, only reason I sold it. Was eithe fix and sell and put cash into another car (which I did) or was about to drop another $5k on it for engine.
mojo hoping the fuel pump diagnosis holds.

Curious.

I would be checking the harness, too.

Heat is a bugger, but the pump is soaking in gas...

I remember having a wacky condition not long ago with the 91 with a start/no start, stall, sputter and die. It turned out to be the fusible link under the battery tray was just hanging by a thread. I'm just saying it's not always the obvious. It's always easier to diagnose and repair if the condition is a constant. Gremlins ......... I hate em ............. Fuel pump was the first thought on that one too but I had just replaced the fuel pump about 6 months earlier. The 91 has been running great as of late. Knock on compound.

It was running again by the time the shop got to work on it?

The engine had been sitting for almost three days (they pushed it inside on Saturday morning), so I'm not surprised they managed to get it to at least (very) cold start. Cold start has been the best start on that car for as long as I have owned it.

I always tell my mechanic to keep it for a few days. I tell him to do some part runs and take it home with him. He never does. Guess he doesn't want to be the one to have to call a tow truck.

hot start problems make me think ignition module failure.

I am stepping back from my initial diagnosis... I misread "no start" as "no crank" and combined with the bangs and such... that could be bad.

The Ignition module is inside the distributor.

I picked Lauren up this afternoon (we have been way out of town in Louis on a "Popecation" since Friday morning). County Corvette checked a bunch of things (ignition, spark plugs, injectors, gas tank, etc.), but narrowed it down to fuel pump.

A couple of observations when driving the car home today:

1) When in drive and at a stop, the tach moved around by no more than 200 RPM. Before, it would lope up and down a range of about 800 RPM.

2) The engine gets so quiet at idle/near idle that there were a few times I thought it had shut off.

3) I accelerated slowly to about 35 mph (the transmission shifts a couple times and leaves RPMs at about 900) and hammered it. In the past, this has consistently yielded a bunch of chugging, knocking, and then a Check Engine code. Today, it simply yielded steadily increasing RPMs and speed (perhaps as designed? ).

I am sorry for misreading the original diags... As I said above, I read "no start" as "no crank", and felt it was a head gasket.

Glad it's now under control!!!
