THURSDAY’S EXPERIENCE CONVINCED ME USAA’S TELEPHONE/ON LINE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED IN HELL BY ONE OF THE DEVIL’S MORE MALICIOUS MINIONS. BUT I DO HAVE TO ADMIT MY LOUSY HEARING AND ELECTRONIC INEPTITUDE PLAYED THEIR PART IN THIS EXPERIENCE.

TODAY I FINALLY GOT IN CONTACT WITH A YOUNG WOMAN WHO WAS KNOWLEDGEABLE, COMPETENT, AND HELPFUL. THEY HAVE BEEN QUITE ILL SERVED BY THEIR CONTRACT EVALUATOR/APPRAISAL OUTFIT WHICH OPERATES OUT OF CALIFORNIA. THEIR CONTACT MAN MADE A CURSORY EXAMINATION OF ABOUT 15 MINUTES, TOOK LOTS OF PICTURES WITH HIS CELL PHONE AND DEPARTED. HE/THEY THEN TURNED IN A REPAIR ESTIMATE THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A SIGHT-UNSEEN PAPER EXERCISE LISTING PARTS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN SHOWN TO BE DAMAGED. THIS TOTALED ALMOST THREE TIMES THE ESTIMATE MADE BY MY RESTORATION MAN. THEY THEN CALLED THE CAR A TOTAL LOSS AND OFFERED ME ABOUT $11K AND THEY TAKE MY CAR. THERE IS NO KNOWN MECHANICAL DAMAGE, ALL BODY WORK.

WHEN I FINALLY GOT CONTACT WITH THE RIGHT PERSON I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD PAY ME $9K AND I COULD KEEP THE CAR. THAT’S TWICE WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO FIX THE CAR----GO FIGURE??? IN OKLAHOMA THAT MEANS NO CHANGE TO TITLE. HOW IT AFFECTS FUTURE INSURANCE ON THE CAR I DO NOT KNOW. I PRESUME I WOULD HAVE TO INSURE IT WITH ANOTHER COMPANY. APPARENTLY THEIR BUREAUCRACY IS SO RIGID THEY CAN’T JUST GO BACK, RE-COMPUTE, AND PAY ME FOR THE REPAIR WORK; “TOTAL” IS ENGRAVED IN STONE. SO THEY PAY ME TWICE WHAT THEY SHOULD AND I HAVE TO GO TO THE TROUBLE OF REINSURING MY CAR.

AND THERE IT RESTS AT PRESENT. SORRY ABOUT NO PICS, MAYBE I CAN GET DARLING WIFE TO TAKE SOME WITH HER PHONE.

TUNE IN NEXT WEEK FOR THE NEXT EXCITING EPISODE!

I WAS INITIALLY TOLD THAT THERE WOULD BE NO TITLE CHANGE; NOW I'M TOLD THE TITLE WILL CHANGE TO SALVAGE. I'LL LOOK INTO THAT MONDAY.

If the title changes to salvage it's not worth it. If it stays clean, you can fix it yourself with the money and keep driving it.

I have to disagree with Matt. (How unusual) Even if the title changed to salvage, I would fix it, keep it, and drive it till it croaks (or you croak) whichever comes first. The title will not affect drivability and the financial loss from having a salvage title is offset by the generous settlement. Sounds better than your first option was.

AS FAR AS I CAN ASCERTAIN THE ONLY DRAWBACK TO A SALVAGE TITLE WOULD BE RESALE VALUE. IT IS HIGHLY IMPROBABLE THAT I WOULD SELL THIS CAR. IT WILL MOST LIKELY GO TO ONE OF THE GRANDKIDS. MY NAMESAKE #3 GRANDSON LOVES IT, BUT MY SHY, RETIRING, #2 GRANDDAUGHTER HAS ALREADY TOLD ME, "I WANT THIS CAR WHEN YOU DIE." SHE'S SO SUBTLE :-)

I'LL HAVE TO EXPLORE THE RE-INSURENCE SITUATION MONDAY.

MY RESTORATION GUY IS IN ARKANSAS TODAY PICKING UP A HOOD FOR IT.

salvage means many things... mostly, it means the repair costs exceeded the book value.

With that said, take a lot of pics of the car in its current state. Document the hell out of it, keep receipts and photograph the repair process.

With that level of documentation, and a clean bill of structural health, there should be little or no concerns.

Remember this: at one point, not that long ago, a Shelby GT350 was easily totaled in a road accident. Does anyone care today?

Do some reading in reference to your own state laws. A salvage title in OK means the damage is 60-70% of the value of the car. It is not legal to drive on the roadway. If you choose to repair it, you can do so and apply for a rebuilt title. Once the vehicle is inspected and a rebuilt title is issued, you can drive it.

A basic/standard vehicle that has been rebuilt is worth about 60% of one that does not have a rebuilt title.

I still stand behind my statement.

And we still haven't seen pictures....

Gee whiz that does not look like a total to me.......looks like about a 2000 dollar fix.....a little bondo and some red spray can paint and you can fix it for about 30 bucks .......unless of course the hood won't open.....then that can get pricy.......

$3k with a new hood.

Tops.

The insurance appraiser is a dumb ass.

I had an accident last year. Some dude backed into the front license plate. No more than some cracks in the hood paint. It was $2k to replace the front bumper and paint it and the hood.

Figure that your bumper is fixable and the hood needs replaced, that works out to about $3k.

The appraiser should be fired.

Wow I can't believe they want to total your car for a hood and bumper cover...

Just goes to show haw bad resale value is on our C4s.

At this point the Insurace company has pretty much backed themselves into a corner about what they are willing to and in turn there is not a lot you can do. I would take the money, fix the car, get a rebuilt title and enjoy the car.

SPENT THE DAY PICKING PEOPLES BRAINS ABOUT TITLES AND INSURGENCE.

MATT IS RIGHT ABOUT THE TITLE. AFTER BEING TOTALED OUT I HAVE TO GET A SALVAGE TITLE ($30). AFTER REPAIR I HAVE TO GET A REBUILT TITLE (ANOTHER $30). THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA WILL NICKLE & DIME YOU TO DEATH :-0 THIS IS ALL DONE LOCALLY AT THE TAG OFFICE. APPARENTLY A LOT OF OKIES JUST IGNORE THE WHOLE THING AND NEVER CHANGE THE TITLE AT ALL. NOT A GOOD MOVE,IMHO, SUCH STUNTS TOO OFTEN COME BACK TO BITE YOU IN THE ASS.

USAA SAYS I CAN RE-INSURE THE CAR WITH THEN WITH NO RESTRICTIONS. THAT WAS A SURPRISE. MAYBE THEN I CAN SCRATCH UP THE PAINT AND THEY WILL GIVE ME ANOTHER $9K? FARMERS WAS ALSO EAGER TO SIGN ME UP ONCE THE CAR IS REPAIRED.

THAT OBVIATES MY TWO MAIN CONCERNS. AS I HAVE NO INTENTION OF SELLING THE CAR, TITLE HICKIES ARE NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME. IF I SHOULD EVER HAVE TO SELL IT ANDY'S SUGGESTED PHOTOGRAPH AND DOCUMENT PROGRAM SHOULD HELP. IF THE LUCKY GRANDCHILD SELLS IT, THEY ARE ON THEIR OWN :-)

THE CURTAIN CAME DOWN ON THE LAST ACT OF THE TOMATO FARCE TODAY WITH THE END OF THE TITLE TAPDANCE.

THE CAR LOOKS BETTER THAN WHEN I BOUGHT IT; THE ROCK CHIPS ON THE HOOD ARE GONE, AS IS THE HOOD :-) GOOD COLOR MATCH AND A GREAT PAINT JOB ON HOOD & BUMPER COVER. I WAS STARTLED TO FIND HE PAINTED THE CENTER AIRDAM RED. NOT SURE I LIKE THAT.

SO I HAVE MY CAR BACK, LOOKING BETTER THAN ANTI-CRASHUM, A REBUILT TITLE, SAME INSURANCE WITH USAA, AND $5K FOUND MONEY. HAVE TO ADMIT, THIS WAS ONE OF MY BETTER ACCIDENTS.
