The original self-oiling air conditioning compressor on my 1985 [A4/very stock/76k miles] is spewing even more fluid than usual onto the inside of the hood and various hoses and other engine parts. The system continues to cool very effectively—it's just the greater amount of fluid that concerns me.

Is there any adjustment that might reduce the fluid generation? Am I looking at a new compressor? Is there anything else I should know?

Unfortunately, no, John. It's the front seal in the compressor.

But before buying a new compressor, I look for a shop that would replace the seal OR rebuild the original.

IIRC all they have to do is pull off the clutch and pop a new seal in. Then of course, recharge the system.
But there nay be a situation with the rest of the seals in the system being compatible with the newer Freon, you'll have to check on that too.

Thank you, Bill.

What Bill said. Try to stick with R12 if you can. It is likely you'll get an accumulator/dryer and an orifice tube since they are evacuating and refilling.

Bringing this thread back up with a follow-up question: what kind of local shop would do this work?

Any good shop that offers full service repairs, or, a specially A/C shop.

I have found that specialty AC shops are pricey...

I do my own work, but with R12, a capture is required.

Then again, I wonder how much R12 is left... if the seal is spewing oil, it's losing coolant. And fast.

Also, the hoses may need an upgrade. Older hoses can't contain the R134 as effectively. I have been told that R134 is able to seep out of R12 hoses.

Any ac shop or competent full mechanic can do it. Or an enthusiast in his garage if the r12 is already gone. Most likely a mechanic will recommend a replacement compressor, but push for a bench rebuild because of your ncrs.
