I've been shopping valve covers and I've also run some searches here and the other forum. I can't seem to find a definite answer to the question of whether or not we can run tall covers without hitting the wiper motor or the other parts in front, back, etc...
This has been dogging me for a couple weeks now and it's starting to wear thin.
Some covers look good but won't retain the gasket while you put it on.
Stockers are just a bit too short, problem with this, too expensive for that,...
I'm just about to lose my cool over this, and then one of my best homies goes out and dies on his H-D Fatboy.
This crap is starting to get to me.
Any good suggestions? Thanks in advance.

so very sorry to hear of your loss Bob......that's real tough.....

I still have those Corvette script valve covers that I bought for my 90 that I never got to put on due to I moved up to my C5.....I will see if I have a pic of them and post it.

Yea, Bob... that seriously sucks about your friend passing. So sudden and just not right.

Tall valve covers have only one fitment issue I am aware of... that's the alternator bracket on the LT1 cars. The best test is to get a straight edge and see how things line up.

Thanks guys for the sympathies. You're right, it does suck.
It sucks a lot. He'd recently moved out of state and fallen in love with the new area. Things were really starting to go well for him, and then this.
As for the V covers, maybe I'll take a look on C-list to see what's around.

U-man, thanks for the offer, I'm interested in seeing what you have and if they're tall enough to clear my rollers.

Thank you again guys.

Some serious work was needed to clear the alternator on my LT1

Wow! I'm gonna give you the gold star for today's number one understatement. Kinda makes me glad I'm working on an L98 car.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Bob.

Does this car also have a Superram like the old one?

Tall covers might interfere with the wiper motor cover. That can be remedied by trimming the rubber isolators where it mounts to the firewall.

Thank you Mat.
This car does not have a SuperRam, it has a FIRST intake. It's pretty much like a tuned port on steroids. I can roll a wooden 1-3/4" ball thru the runners.
I got a pair of tall covers to use to check clearances, so we'll see what happens...

I've worked on a car with a First intake. It was big and obnoxious like the Superram I was just curious because some valve covers will need clearancing to fit with a Superram.

It's funny you say those exact words, as that's how a large part of my past seems to describe me
I did a test fit and placed the intake on the engine. with new engine mounts( oem type) and AFR heads, my hood is not gonna clear the intake. it'll be worse with the throttle body on there too. I'll probably go to a different intake or try to find a swap for a miniram or something.
I'll burn that bridge when I get to it.

The first intake fit on the 88 I worked on, but the front of the TB hit and put a crack in the hood. It needed a spacer that tilted the TB down/forward.

I'd go miniram. I never want to install a Superram ever again.

I've been looking at one of these to put on the hood

But I have to admit, I have mixed thoughts on adding a scoop

I'd forgotten you had those. I like the looks of those a lot, but I need covers with breathers and an oil fill.
Earlier today I took a chance on some "fabbed" covers and they worked!
I never expected this type to work and clear everything, but with a minor amount of clearancing on the a/c bracket they went on and and did not interfere w/ my intake. Granted this was a mock up, but so far, things look pretty good. Now... What to do with this FIRST intake and the hood.......

I wouldn't care for that hood scoop, I think we are on the same page there.

As usual, if it seems to good to be true...
Did some more today and found that the a/c compressor is in contact w/ the right cover, but not too badly. After a bit of cutting and some work getting a piece of angle aluminum to fit, I'll take it to a weld shop to see if they'll weld it in for me.
At this point it's dinner time w/ the missuz and co., so I'll get back to it after the valve cover is done and they're painted.
Thanks again for all the help guys.

the final destination on this part of the project is a set, "fabbed," covers. I got 'em off C-list. I ended up cutting a notch out of the right side cover and having a section of aluminum angle welded in. They were flat black powder coated, so after the welding, I had to remove the PC. Mostly I did it with sanding. I used a Harbor Fr8 palm sander that utilizes 1/4 sheets of paper. For paper I used some 50-grit and got most of it off. I used paper rolls to get into the bolt recesses. I had to be careful not to damage the weld on any of the edges, so powder was left in these hard to get to areas.
I went to Home Depot and got some spray on paint stripper by "Kleen-Strip". It contains Methelyne-chloride that attacks the powder. I sprayed it on in two heavy coats about 15 minutes apart and while it soaked in I sanded the other cover. I read online not to allow any stripper you use to dry as this will create difficulty in removal. So make sure you have time to do this from start to finish. After at least an hour I wore good quality rubber gloves and, using a good old soapy Brillo pad, washed and scrubbed the 1st cover while the 2nd soaked in stripper.
After a while, I scrubbed the 2nd. They came out remarkably well. The Brillo was very good at getting to the areas near the welds. I still need to get into some of the corners, but a mini wire brush and my Dremel should take care of that.

It was a lot of exercise, but was worth it. I could've gotten a product from Eastwood, but that would require waiting for delivery.
FWIW, that's what I did.

BV, my experience is posted above. Put a crack in my friend's hood at the TB corner.

I have new engine mounts, not squashed down old ones. I also have AFR heads that "might" be raising the intake up, but I'm not too sure they would be the issue.

The trial fit I did was base, runners, plenum only. The hood came into contact with the "FIRST" on top, at the front of the plenum.
