Gurus,

... we are seriously contemplating a full US Route 1 trip from Key West, Florida to Fort Kent. We would likely do this in late May/early June of this year and the vehicle of choice is likely to be Grace, our 2003 50th Anniversary Convertible.

Thoughts?

You have to pass through Homestead to get to Key West. If you need a place to crash let us know. Key West is about a 3 to 4 hour drive from my house. As long as we are home that is. We are going on a cruise mid June.

If you've learned anything about us, we put miles on the older models—this should finally get Grace over 50k.

We've been thinking about doing Route 1 for a couple of years. We were out celebrating the 23rd (!) anniversary of our first date on Wednesday evening and somehow it all fell together for this year.

Thanks for the offer—we'd love to meet another Guru in person. I'll check in with you when our timing is substantially clearer and closer.

Updated schedule, with nightly stops—still somewhat tentative:

   Bryn Mawr, PA

   Winston-Salem, NC

   Savannah, GA

   Vero Beach, FL

Key West, FL (begin US Route 1)

   Titusville, FL

   Augusta, GA

   Raleigh, NC

   Baltimore, MD

   Stamford, CT

   Portsmouth, NH

   Bar Harbor, ME

Presque Isle, ME (end US Route 1)

   Montpelier, VT

   Saratoga Springs, NY

   Bryn Mawr, PA

Any more thoughts?

looks pretty good to me!

A few thoughts...

1. Avoid Lumberton NC... it's a pit.

2. There is a new-ish Marriott property in downtown Savannah. Worth staying at and close to the cool houses

3. Both Richmond, VA and JAX, FL have very focused rush hours... about the same times, too. 7am to 8:30am, and 5pm to 6:30pm, give or take. If you are outside those times, go through town, the center is much faster then the bypasses. The thing with JAX, stay in the far left lane, the exits can get very backed up on 295.

4. FHP cites those driving in the left lane. So don't do it.

Thanks for the advice. We're staying at the also decently located Hampton Inn in downtown Savannah on Bay Street. We're avoiding Interstate 95 for most of the way down, so we'll miss Lumberton.

US 1 through Miami, Ft Lauderdale and West Palm is going to be a bear. Just want you to understand that BEFORE you encounter it. If you could go through those mid day it would be in your best interest. Say .. 10:00 AM to 03:00PM .It will be crowded but not gridlocked. Traffic in South Florida was on the top 10 worst list. Probably still is.
