It's 8:45 AM on the east coast and I'm hunkered down in our A/V room watching the pre-race coverage. It's a hot day in Le Mans—who else plans to watch at least some of the race?

You can throw a blanket over the GT Pro qualifying results—the cars are very closely matched.

Race has started and already the #4 Nismo prototype has tire trouble, likely because of contact.

Almost an hour in and there's already been one slow zone because one of the LMP2 cars went  off.

LMP1: Toyota #7, Porsche #1, Toyota #8

LMP2: Oreca #31, Oreca #25, Oreca #24

LM GT Pro: Aston Martin #97, Aston Martin #95, Ferrari #41 (Corvettes 5th and 9th in class)

LM GT Am: Corvette #50 (the Larbre Competition "privateer" team), Aston Martin #98, Porsche #77

GT Pro cars are now pitting.

Crash with about 1:20 in. The #88 Porsche gets tagged by the #26 Oreca. Heavy damage to both cars—they're likely done. Yellow zone.

Attrition looks like it is going to be high this year. There are likely three or four cars already out. The #88 Porsche has officially been retired.

Live timing is sort of up here.

The #2 Porsche LMP1 is in the garage with something "serious." In the LM GT Pro lead, #98 Aston Martin goes off-roading, shreds a tire, and damages the rear bodywork.

Three and a half hours in. Most of the drivers have calmed down at least a little.

LMP1: Toyota #7, Porsche #1, Toyota #8

LMP2: Oreca #31, Oreca #13, Oreca #37

LM GT Pro: Aston Martin #97, Ford #67, Porsche #92 (Corvettes 5th and 12th in class)

Five hours in. The #9 Toyota has to pit because the passenger side door has opened—they fix it with WD-40.

The #82 Ferrari just got taken out by the #28 Oreca Gibson. The Ferrari is essentially destroyed; the driver (Pierre Kaffer) is okay.

LMP1: Porsche #1, Toyota #7, Toyota #8

LMP2: Oreca Gibson #18, Oreca Gibson #31, Ligier Gibson #34

Heading into the evening and (finally) no safe zones. The #28 Oreca has been given a 7 minute stop-and-go for taking out the #82 Ferrari.

Out of 60 cars that started, 3 have been officially retired, with 6 more effectively out of the race.

Le Mans is all about history—AJ Foyt is on-site on the 50th anniversary of his win with Dan Gurney.

The #8 Toyota is in the garage with brake-related problems. A symptom is that the right front brake is on fire.

Disaster! The #64 Corvette (Milner) lost a rear wheel and crashed in the Porsche Curve and has now spun and gotten stuck entering the pits. They're pulling him out, but it looks really bad.

Back to green after they clean the track. There is now a legitimate chance that an LMP2 car will end up on the overall podium.

And now the overall leader (the #7 Toyota) is having what looks like clutch issues.

Now the #50 Corvette spins, I believe unassisted. Another slow zone.

Ten minutes later, back to full green. Dan Gurney has called in to Bob Varsha on the broadcast.

#92 Porsche is not yet moving, #50 Corvette is back on track.

I'm back ...

... one of the LMP2 cars is actually in the overall lead, but that team believes the #2 Porsche will catch them before the end of the race.

Eleven cars have officially been retired, including the #1 Porsche, which lost all oil pressure with a little over three and a hal;f hours to go. There will not be enough LMP1 cars running at the end of the race to fill a podium.

The #44 Ligier Gibson has spun. Yellow zone.
