[1985 Corvette, A4, very stock]

The cigarette lighter on my 1985 gets power, but the spring doesn't hold in and, thus, the lighter doesn't eventually pop. It's getting plenty of power and heats up if I hold it in—I (very luckily) avoided seriously burning myself several years (there was actually dark smoke coming from my finger bandhead ).

I've tried multiple lighters with the same result—any ideas?

Replace it... They are not expensive and a new one is less prone to cause a fire!

I don't know what ultimately fails in a lighter to cause it to not pop...

The socket itself can be replaced very easily. Is there anything in the socket preventing the lighter from sitting inside flush? I know when my cigarette lighter (used for power) was intermittent, I removed it and cleaned it and that made a huge difference.

Thanks, folks. I'll futz with it tomorrow.

Judging is Sunday, and I'd hate to lose points on something so simple ...

I couldn't get it to work for the judging, but I still got my Top Flight. I'm going to buy the socket and make another run at it.

Did you happen to purchase a special lighter removal tool, Matt? Keep us up on the fix, John.

Lighters are fickle... There are 2 parts and heat kills the lighter itself.

I may have an old OEM lighter laying about. If I can find it, I will let you know.

Trust me, it hasn't been used in a long long time.

I'm resucitating this four-year-old thread at Matt's hinting. Probably going to purchase a new socket, but looking for any other suggestions.

After rereading the original post I think I was confused on what was bad. Is the socket the problem or the actual cigarette lighter (that you push in) itself?

I'm not sure. We have power, but the lighter never "sticks" when I push it in.

I got a hint yesterday that the problem might be a mis-match between the lighter and the socket, so I tried all my lighters with the current socket. The first two lighters didn't stick—the third lighter blew the fuse. Sigh …

… I think I'm going to put off trying to fix this until I can get a complete lighter/socket combination.

I was going to suggest swapping out the entire socket but it sounds like you've been doing some testing. Hopefully you can find a mated pair.
