Cool crisp start to the morning. I noticed my nemesis, the Great Blue Heron, has returned. Obviously chased out of his northern climes by the blasts of cold arctic air. There are two I have seen locally plus a number of white herons. Sue has a new visitor to her pond as well but he is welcome. It's a Carolina Wood Duck. She feeds him daily and is getting more friendly with Sue and less scared of people walking around the nursery. She named it Woody. Of course he'll head north with the rest of the snowbirds at a later date or could join another flock of wood ducks should the need arise. After all, his name IS Woody. Thankfully my back is returning to a lower, more tolerable level of pain. Thank you. Thank you very much. Hope to resume inside prep on the back bathroom. I want to get done out there. Also, the pressure tank bladder failed on the new tank used back there and I'm waiting for a new shipment of them to come into the local supply house to get an exchange. They told me they would exchange it. I certainly hope so. I don't want to have to ship it to the manufacturer.

And the beat goes on. The beat goes on .........

I'm known by my friends to preach about the impact of the incoming masses from the northern states and post about the negatives of living in Florida to try an dissuade others from moving here. You have probably heard me mention something about the impact of an ever increasing population. Here is a quote of one of my posts on a the South Florida Wildlands Association Facebook page.

"Politicians have done little to protect and more to spur development believing that more tax revenue and consumer spending is beneficial. I've watched the demise through a few decades now. The contamination of Florida and Biscayne Bays. The loss off habitat and native species. The introduction of non natives species throughout the state and waterways. How much is too much? We've already passed that point. If you know where to find the real Florida, enjoy it while you can before the plans are in place. They're going to "Pave paradise and put up a parking lot." "

SEMI-SUNNY AND COLDISH THIS MORNING, ABOUT RIGHT FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR, THE CHEROKEES THINK.

FLORIDA GETS THE NORTHEASTERN REFUGEES, TEXAS GETS THE CALIFORNIA MIGRANTS. COLORADO HAS ALREADY BECOME EAST CALIFORNIA. THE TROUBLE WITH THESE FOLKS IS THEY BRING THEIR BAD HABITS WITH THEM.

YEARS AGO DOCTORS SUGGESTED THOSE WITH SEVERE ALLERGIES MOVE TO ARIZONA WHERE THERE WERE LESS IRRITATING POLLEN. THEY DID, AND PROMPTLY PLANTED ALL THE VEGETATION THEY WERE ALLERGIC TO.

THE ONLY CONSTANT TODAY IS CHANGE AND IT'S PICKING UP SPEED. NOT A PLEASANT PROSPECT, IMHO.

IT'S AUTO ROTATION DAY, HARVEY GOES INTO THE READY RACK, THE TOMATO TO THE BARN. OUR SPELL OF PRETTY WEATHER IS DUE TO DEPART WEDNESDAY WITH THE ARRIVAL OF ANOTHER MINI-MONSOON.

ALWAYS FORWARD, GURUS---

I was fortunate to spend a couple of summers in Florida back in the 60's...... before Disney, before the Moon trips out of Canaveral. I remember a TV show called Surf Side 6 which was a detective show with Troy Donahue who based out of a Houseboat on Miami beach....... I remember staying at the Fontainbleau Hotel back in 64 when it was the hot spot on the beach....we also could visit the Surf Side 6 houseboat they used to film the series....... I can remember going to Silver Springs and Weeki Watchee springs and of course Daytona beach when they still drove on the beach....... lots of memories of the old Florida...before the dark times......

I hope to live long enough to spend some winters there over on the Gulf coast..... experience some Salt Life..... I will leave a small footprint...I promise......

Ok time to get to work now....... don't be lollygagging

Good Morning CGs!

I did get the Christmas lights out up the other day. We aren't lighting them yet,but they're ready. Nice to get it done on a warm day.

Had a nice little family dinner last night with my mom and the in-laws. It was a belated bday celebration for the wife. We all had a nice time.

TB - very nice work on the cabinets.

Tommy - how are you going to charge that duck for all of the bread? You'll put it on his bill, of course.

I'll see myself out...

Hope everyone has a great day!

Since he's a wood duck, are you charging him for room and board?

Sunny here supposed to warm up some and really nice tomorrow.
Can walk about some unassisted but hurts so cant stay walking long. Foot has to be up.
I love going to Florida but see so many high rises and less beach houses, less boardwalk fun areas. Everything is part of whatever high rise you’re in. No public parking anymore. I hear locals badmouth the snowbirds. I get it. I’d like to be a snowbird but not one of the kind they hate.

It's more of the politicians that are at fault. If you build it, they will come. Developers have lined the pockets of those that would see fit to permit growth into sensitive environmental areas. They developers are already taking over farm country block by block working their way to the edge of the Everglades. Like I said, I moved here to a quaint little city of 25,000 people. Hurricane Andrew cut that in half. It has since grown to over 70,000. mainly a bedroom community for those willing to make the drive to Miami. 1 1/2 to 2 hours one way during rush hour. Developers have bought out sections of Miami block by block from downtown heading in all directions. Sue's family moved here from New York back in the 1940's The Army had chased the Seminole and Miccosukee tribe south and into the glades in the late 1800's. Henry Flagler along with other visionaries built the railroad. Those that came mostly became farmers or shopkeepers. They had to endure the heat, mosquitoes and other biting insects, alligators, snakes and more. I remember in the 1980's the Miccosukee tribe avoided contact with outsiders. Few spoke English except for the children that were taught in school. They lived by the old ways in open Chickee huts made from cedar posts and Sable Palm thatched roofs. A common kitchen area was set in the middle of the camp. My brother in law married a Miccosukee woman and over time I was introduced to many of the tribal members. Sue became good friends with her sister in laws mother and was until her recent passing. We know Tigers, Tigertails, Osceola's and also many tribal leaders. We also knew the medicine woman. The white man was not often trusted. For good reason I can assure you. Back then the tribe was just under 300 people. It has grown to about 500 but many are of mixed blood. The Seminoles had built a casino back in the 80's. They were more mainstream and had integrated with the settlers all along trading back when the railroad came. Blacks had also settled in the Miami area in an area known as Overtown and Liberty City. They also settled an area outside of Coconut Grove known as The Black Grove. So all along this area has had a variety of people. Some even from the Bahama's, Jamaica and Cuba. Once the Miccosukee built a casino back in the late 1990's everything changed for them. They got a share of the profits from the casino profits so with such a small population they all made some good money. A husband, wife, and two children of Miccosukee descent were making about 100k a year not including whatever they did for a living like airboat operators, gift shop workers, alligator wrestling, making crafts or working at the casino. Suddenly they had money. They started building houses, some moving off the reservation. They bought cars and boats and electronics. The lack of trust though continued. The kids were going to better schools and some of the then younger tribal members that were about my age were earning degrees through higher education. The culture started slipping away. The elders were still living in isolation but the kids were out. They were exposed to everything. And they ate it all up. They had everything they could want and they could afford it. I really loved South Florida back before then. It is a place now lost in time. Well, anyway. I hope you enjoyed some of my ramblings. Ya, I still live here and don't know if I'm going anywhere fast. The world keeps changing around me but I still like to escape time. Live a simpler lifestyle. Try to stay away from what's coming. Kind of like the tribal elders. One by one the old timers are gone.

Hey guys...Slept in today. Alarm went off at normal time, I rolled over, turned it off, got up and went to the bathroom, went back to bed and slept for another 2 hours. It was absolutely a glorious day. Low 70s and light breezes. I went out and worked in the shop, delivered a computer I worked on last night, sold another laptop I cleaned up for a former student, delivered some wood samples for a client to test some stains on, back to the shop to work on a small table-top. Went over to the kitchen remodel to double check measurements for counter-tops, then Rosie and I loaded up all the cardboard from all the things I've done, so far, to take to recycle. Then this afternoon, I went back out to the shop and cleaned up some, and made some cutting boards from scraps of my counter-top material. So that was day....I'm tired and ready for bed.

Thanks, Matt. I think Flo-da would be a nice place to visit, but I'll leave it all to you guys...I, kind of, like it here... not really into large populations of people.
