I have an 84 with the Bose cassette, I'm seriously considering replacing it with a Pioneer DEH-P47DH CD Player. I've been told this is a direct fit. Doesn't stick out like some aftermarkets and doesn't require a trim plate. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? how does it look when its in? How does it sound? is the 45 watts enough or do you need to add an amp? thanks for any input.

upgrading the bose systems is best done in totality, not bit by bit.

A few thoughts:

1) I hate that head unit. It's old school.

2) 45 watts is chump change. Most heads don't have enough power to work a coax, let alone an entire system.

3) gut the entire factory system. Install nice drivers up front, and 2 8" subs in the rear speaker enclosures. Get a nice 2 channel amp for the front and a nice mono amp for the subs.

4) I like alpine and eclipse for head units. I prefer sound over a perfect fit.

If your radio and amps are working now, you can go to www.madvet.com and order a REAL bose gm cd player for your car. It will be a direct fit, sound MUCH better than the cassette and give you the original look. If your bose amps are going bad, you can send them to same day audio repair in VA and get them repaired for $55 per amp.

I put that Pioneer in my car and am very happy. I used Pioneer speakers also. Rear 6x9 went in fairly easy. I also put 5 inch in front, they took a little work but will fit. System doesn't have enough power to vibrate windows of cars next to me but i don't like it that loud anyway. Very happy with system but i just like cruiseing with my oldies. I did put in a cd changer also, which is about all i use.

the amp is only half the problem. These enclosures use a crappy paper cone. They go south in a big ugly way.

Every thing works believe it or not but I'm not happy with the sound, the lack of CD, the lack of left/ right balance, and the tiny powered speakers. So as Bogus suggests I will be replacing everything with aftermarket items. I don't need to rattle the windows in the car next to me, but I do need to hear my tunes at 75 MPH with the top off, so I guess that means an amp too.

audio is so very subjective....

however, a few thoughts...

The corvette interior is VERY small... so lots of speakers are not the solution. In my 1992 coupe, I have a pair of Canton RS3s (three way separates) a single 10" JL Audio 10W3V2 and a JL Audio 500/5 5 channel amp. That's it.

I know, those speakers were very expensive - 10 years ago! But they still sound GREAT! So alive!!!

Another option is a pair of nice 8" subs in the rear speaker enclosures.

You see, sound is more than just bass or vocals, it's about the entire range of sound. The highs are as important as the lows.

I will post some pics of my install later on... I am tired...

I read on one of the corvette forums that when you replace the OEM Bose stereo with an aftermarket head unit, it causes the SYS error light to illuminate on the dash and it's a PITA to get it to shut off.
I'm getting ready to install a full aftermarket stereo system in my 1991.....Anyone ever experience/hear of this?

yes, it is a known problem. It does not effect pre-1990 cars, tho... they didn't have a CCM in cause it!

now, for the funny part, I have a 92, removed the audio, and DON'T have the light. So I donno why it effects some, but not others.

I have decided to go with the Pioneer dvd/nav/mp3 system for my car... its the avic-d3... what I like about it besides the fact that it has all the bells and whistles is that it allows you to adjust the color of the display... so I can adjust the color to almost match the amber that is the theme in the C4....

Why don't you try alpine for your car stereo?
