[size=12:2ab52f11da] [/size:2ab52f11da]Hey guys got a question I've got 1987 coupe and the ole L98 threw a rod. I'm thinking about buying a crate motor from GM should I retain the aluminum heads or get the vortec heads that come with the engine A second question is how much horsepower can the Dana 36 take.

Thanks

A DANA 36 can take all the horsepower you want to throw at it (within reason). Its the torque that will break it.

Ok, I goofed I meant to type torque. I'm thinking about getting the fast burn 385, I just realized that it already has aluminum heads

No worries mate, what ratio is it? As far as i know, a 2.59:1 will be slightly stronger than anything numerically higher,(not much though if any) but youre going to be pushing it with that in my opinion, it might last for a long time if you dont put sticky tires on it and go drag racing, but then it may not!! If it was me, id get a DANA 44 and throw in there before the DANA 36 fails, that way you have a spare you can either sell, or keep for if you ever want to sell the car. (then put the 36 back in it and keep the 44 for your next one!!)

I am sure you know this, but what breaks a rear end is traction in addition to torque. Like Case advised, if you were to put some slicks on it and had lots of torque, and gripped hard, you could be breaking things. A little slip in the tires is a good thing, it will save some $$$$.

Resized Image But im the kind of person like believes very strongly in being safe rather than sorry. Id much rather spend the money up front and be satisfied if done what i can to prevent failure. If it never happened, i may save some money by not doing these things, but if it did, i know it will cost me less to upgrade before breakage!!

Having said that, the choice is all yours and you are really the only one who can say what's right for you, all we can ever do is offer our suggestions based on what we believe is right for you.
