What brands do you guys suggest?

I'm looking for maybe a 42". I like the 1080, can definitely tell the difference from a 720.

I'm seeing prices around $1200 for everything but samsung and sony.

And then I need the damn stand or wall mount.

This is going in my dad's living room on his direcTV system. If he didn't have digital I wouldn't bother, because the LCDs look horrible on standard cable.

And what else am I going to need? Just a HDMI cable? Or just an svideo and a rca type or optical for digital sound?

Of course the idiot working at Circuit City will tell me to get the Sony, meanwhile he's watching tv on his black&white.

I need some feedback or I'll just get the prettiest one.

Why does it have to be LCD? Look at my old post for my DLP in the off topic section. I love it. During the promotion it came with a free stand. I just bought a basic HDMI cable on amazon for a few bucks - you don't need a $100 monster cable HDMI.

I bought a 47" Visio LCD and love it. I did a good bit of research and then decided that the Visio was a great buy for the money. I have had it for about 6 weeks now and can't believe we ever went without HDTV in the past!!!

I paid $1299 for the TV and $200 for a heavy duty articulating arm mount so that I can pull it out from the wall and rotate it while I'm eating at the table whic is adjacent to our family room.

I would recomend it 100%

I may be wrong here , I heard that the signal sent out by satellite and cable was not 1080P and that true 1080P at this point was only with the Blue ray stuff? I bought a high end 720 for about 1K less than a 1080P after much visual research. Had them put the high end 720 next to the 1080P I was deciding between. For my money it was not enough difference for 1K. Sometimes they put low end beside high end making a much more drastic result. Oh and the 720's can accept a 1080 input

Yeah I was just in the process of looking up directtv's output. If it's even 720, lol.

He watches that most of the time.

1080P is only supported by blu-ray at the moment. On the other hand there are a few channels that send out true 1080i. Sony Bravia or Sharp Aquos have the best picture you can get. If your not running HD then there is no need for an HDMI cable. S-Video or component cables will do just fine.

I have two Sharp HD LCD's, a 42-inch 1080p and a 32-inch 720p, as well as a little 13" standard def Sharp in the kitchen. Great TV's, very happy with them.

Shop the mount separately - I got a good deal on my 32" Sharp from bestbuyplasma.com, but their price on the wall mount I wanted was about $150. I got it somewhere else for $48 shipped - LMAO! Also shop around online for cables, particularly HDMI - lots of high-buck rip-offs out there.

I agree, stay away from Monster Cables. HDMI with gold ends tend to have better picture quality, but its probably not noticable!

Sanyo "42 LCD at Wal-Mart. Had mine about a year with no trouble. Tell the Dish folks you just bought an HDTV and see if they will give you an HDMI cable. You'll want to have one, and you won't want to pay for it if you don't need to.

Samsung 120Hz,20K minimum refresh rate.
Blacks are unbelievable; better than Plasma.
The whole color spectrum is spectacular.

I have an 1080p HD-DVD (UP converter), and the picture is almost 3D. As mentioned, used the HDMI cable between peripherals.

A little pricey (comparable or less than Sony) but worth it.
Best pic when compared side-by-side to Sony, and Mitsubishi (The only models that had comparable features on the top end of LCD)

Circuit City was selling an LG 42" 1080p for $1000 but looks like they ran out of them.

So the best signals he'll be playing is 1080i or 720p with a HD satellite signal. Looks like most of the HD channels use 1080i since it uses less bandwidth than 720p.

But I don't see any TVs advertised as 1080i. Maybe the 1080p TVs are necessary to get the native resolution and will look better than a 720p tv on that signal?

These LCDs look pretty bad when they're playing non-native resolution.

I didn't know dvds were so crappy at 480p.

I'm not an expert on these things, but in the last year I have bought three.

First up was a Sony Bravia(don't remember the exact model). It's a 50" rear projection LCD and for Blu Ray and PS3, it's friggin awesome. Cost was $1399 at Sears. They did a price match on what Best Buy was offering.
I have Optimum IO and it broadcasts at 1080i and makes a big difference over the standard stuff.

Second was a Hitachi 42" plasma. This one is even better than the Sony. I have this in the bedroom and the picture is great. It was $678 at Sears on a special promotion offered to Sears Card holders.

Third is a Panasonic something. Actually my dad bought this to replace his Mitsubishi rear projection. If I'm not mistaken it is a DLP(I'll have to stop by and check). It has a great picture and was bought at 6th Ave Electronics for $1000 and included a free stand.
He loves it, but he doesn't have HDTV yet, he wanted the 56" screen because the CC letters are larger and easier to read.

When I did my research, the 1080p was recommended for tv's larger that 37". The 720 was supposed to be fine for tv's under 37'.
I bought a Vizio 32, 720 because of price and room size. No complaints, picture's great at 1080i.

Haha, the guy at Best Buy told me the 1080p will actually display a 720p HD signal better than a 720p TV.

Is he a complete idiot trying to upsell, or is there any merit to this?

Regardless, it looks like the benefit of a 1080p is somewhere between useless and non-existent for what I need. He doesn't have Blu-Ray.

I picked up a 42" Westinghouse LCD 1080p for 949 at Best Buy a couple of months ago, the only time I really get 1080p is when I hook it up to the computer and use it as a monitor to watch movies.

Nothing else came close to that price for a 1080p 42" and I should be happy with it for years.

There is a lot of good info there. I learned a lot about my tv before I bought it by reading stuff there. I agree, though, it's difficult to wade through all of the garbage.

How do you like the Westinghouse? I have a 19" LCD in the dining room and really don't like it. The picture is fine but the remote is a pain in the ass to use and the volume sucks. That prompted me to go with another Vizio when I bought an LCD for my bed room. I did a 32" in there. It was between that and the 26" Westinghouse but I was afraid the remote and volume issues would be the same with the bigger one.

True, there's a lot of drivel, but at least you can get some consensus or patterns about what's good or bad about the various brands, and what are the best values.
