What is it with these tires blowing apart?

Can't Goodyear make a tire that isn't a ticking timebomb?

it really must be embarrassing for them... At one point, Goodyear was THE #1 tire maker in the world, now it's Michelin, and they don't show any signs of reclaiming this glory.

During his interview after the wreck, Junior alluded to the fact that there was a fair bit of tire trouble during the ARCA race too. They use Hoosiers. Interesting.

Looks like most people took a big hit this race...should be interesting to see the points.

Tony finally won one and didn't even cause the wreck.

Everyone in the heat of the chase that is, except for Johnson. It was good to see Tony get a win before his tenure at JGR comes to an end. It'll be good to see him back in a Chevy next year and I wish him luck.
As usual at Talledega, it was not a boring race.

I watched Dale Jr's interview. It sounds like the track surface is the biggest issue.

I take exception at the comment that implies Tony causes wrecks. He is no more prone to cause one than anyone else.

Am I the only one that thought that call at the end against Regan Smith was 100% bullshit? He was under the 20 car and its clear to me that Tony swerved down which forced him to either let off, spin Tony, or move below the line. Looked like there may have even been some contact.

Had the roles been reversed, I bet Nascar would still have given it to Tony. And if they didn't, he would've climbed the fence and attacking the flagman.

Honestly I could give a crap about Regan Smith, but he was still robbed.

That's like blaming the girl for the condom breaking.

Goodyear designs a tire specifically for that track. If they can't make it work on that track surface, then they've failed at their job. I've never seen tires explode like that.

They initially blamed Junior's blowout on a puncture. That excuse sounded great until 5 other tires blew up too.

With the Hoosiers blowing up, too, it makes me think the track is partially to blame... in the sense that it's eating tires. and I agree, the tires should be up to the task.

Lemme put it this way - the old bias ply racing tires were not this funky. GY hasn't been doing their job for the last several years, and this year isn't any different. Indy was a piss-poor example of how racing tires are made.

It's time to get past the current NASCAR tire rule - 225/15/50 radial. How old school is that? They are supposed to be looking into 16 and 17" rims. I can't wait.

As far as Regan Smith's loss...I can see your point, but they made the right call. I am not defending Tony, it could have been anybody. Tony was just blocking. It wasn't like Smith was down there the whole time when Tony forced him. Tony started to move down the moment Smith did, so in other words, he forced himself down there. Smith should have tried a pass to the outside even though it probably wouldn't have worked.

They have that rule for a reason and I am glad they stuck to it. But I am sure it was an awful feeling though for Smith.

Yes and when the rule was first implemented a few years ago, Tony was the first one to get nailed by it. So I don't think the favoritism argument holds any water, nor can it be said that Tony is one of Nascar's golden boys. That just doesn't wash, as many times as he's been disciplined for being, well Tony.....

Smith was inbounds, and inside of Tony. The rule doesn't say you have to be down there a certain amount of time.

How did he force himself down there? He had no choice! If he had stayed up above the line Tony would have ran over his fender and spun in front of the field. And that is precisely why you're allowed to pass below the yellow line when forced down there. To prevent wrecks. It's been done and allowed many times before.

See 1:18 of this video.

And DW's quote, "It would be very unpopular to black flag him."

I am on dial-up so I cannot watch that video, but I seem to remember they moved almost instantaneously to the yellow line which caused Smith to go below or they would have wrecked.

I will have to watch it again when I get back on broadband.

Mike Helton says:

We have the yellow-line rule, and I think we all think it's a good rule. But we've seen that you have figured out that to protect your spot, you can move down on the yellow line and keep a car from passing you. If you've made him go down there yourself, you are now subject to a black-flag, too.

So I guess by NASCAR's rules, the winner is Paul Menard.
