I'm thinking of doing a guru NFL playoff pool for money. Who's interested? There's a few different types of pools we can choose from.

Depends on how many people I guess.

How does $20 each sound? It's not much fun if there's only a $25 pot on the line. I make that much panhandling on the street corner for an hour.

I also prefer to do winner take-all, but I'm open to suggestions if you guys want to Obamatize the payouts.

The winners lose and the losers win.

Ok, here's my system, its quite simple:

Assign point values 1-12 for each of the 12 playoff teams.

Every time a team wins, you get that number of points you assigned to it.

What makes it interesting is, the favorites don't play in the first week, so that means if you put 12 points on the Giants, you won't get any points from them that week. It really rewards someone who can pick a good underdog.

I also like that you make all your picks up front, there's no hassle with getting everyone's picks weekly and sending out updates.

I don't know if there's any online places that manage this sort of system, I can just put it in a spreadsheet and put it on here.

If anyone has other ideas, let me know.

I'm in regardless, I'll think about what type of pool I like and offer feedback later when I have some time to think about it.

There are a million sites that do it, but most of the good ones charge money. While that's easier and anyone can look stuff up online, it eats into the payouts.

I vote for a socialist approach to prizes where we all pay in and then the winner distributes the proceedings evenly back to the participants regardless of finish.

What about a March Madness style bracket? It's all submitted up front, each round has the same number of points (meaning each game doubles in importance the deeper you go into the playoffs).

Are there enough games to make this work?

The problem with that is you're left trying to bet on a game when you don't even know who's playing.

On this one, it doesn't matter.

I thought about increasing points the further it goes, but that actually spreads the points out even more and decides it sooner.

Maybe we can double points for the superbowl or something, or offer bonus points for picking certain stats or parts of the superbowl. The last few were decided before the superbowl even started.

I think it's 3%, so 60 cents.

If everyone sends you $21 you can keep the change...
