My neighbor told me two uniformed cops showed up at my doorstep while I was gone Sunday.

Apparently they parked on a side street out of view, then walked up and knocked on the door. Then left shortly after.

They didn't leave a note or anything.

Neighbor says they didn't knock on his door or anyone else's.

Call me suspicious. I trust cops (including imposters) less than I trust other strangers. I'm keeping my shit locked up tight. I should get a "police not welcome" sign to put next to my "no solicitors" sign.

Under what circumstances would cops do that, yet not leave a notice of some sort?

I would think even if it was a noise complaint or something similar, they would post something on the door, or at least come back at another time.

I had left about 4 hours before that, so it's not as if they just missed me.

Or did the Jehovahs witnesses start wearing uniforms and carrying nightsticks recently?

Call 'Em and see. You've nothing to hide, I assume. And they would probably like to know if impersonators are about.

I second that. If they got something for you they will either tell you on the phone or want you to come in.

Surely they could find something. I'm not inviting any cops unless they have a search warrant, or at least a 12pack of beer.

I remember in college, the campus cops were at my dorm room for some other reason, and one of them peeped in and saw a traffic sign hanging on the wall. He wanted to confiscate it because I couldn't show a reciept for proof that I owned it. I basically told them to get lost or I'd confiscate their shoes if they didn't show me a receipt.

Maybe they finally connected all the dots before the statute of limitations ran out. Did you resolve that bench warrant issue? Or perhaps the Postal Inspection Service following up on the mailman you reported for not doing his job. Does the word hydroponics mean anything to you?

I was the manager in a warehouse were people were always coming and going. One day two plain clothes cops showed up looking for one of my guys. He was off that day, they asked me not to tell him they were looking for him. I didn't have to, one of the other guys saw them and called him. Turned out they wanted to talk to him about his neighbor doing something funny w/ kids or something. Had nothing to do w/ him.

Any trouble in the neighborhood?

Hmm.

I just got off the phone with them. They said there was a 911 call and hangup from this address, and they're required to respond. They did a helluva job because my roommate was actually here at the time and didn't hear any knocking. I'm guessing the nincompoops stood there on the porch pushing the doorbell button that isn't hooked up to anything, and then gave up and left.

They had the right house number but the street changes names at the intersection. This sounds like bullshit because my house number does not exist on that street, and because I do not have a land line that could be associated with my address.

But it's reassuring to know that someone out there could be laying on their kitchen floor with rigormortis since Sunday because their phone number didn't pull up the correct address. You'd think they could just call back the number right away that hung up. Because dying people don't usually get up to answer the door 20 minutes later.

Actually the city has my street name wrong in their system.

My water bill and electric bill have different addresses.

I would, though, notify the city that the GIS is not accurate.

Our new office complex and all the streets were built 2 years ago, and it still doesn't show up on the online map programs. They're hopeless.

You can notify the online map programs. They are not immune to fixing omissions and such.
