I am looking for a product that I can use to safely clean my intake without damaging it or anything else on the car. It is original with 40 years of grime on it. It has been washed with engine degreaer but nothing more.

I'm not sure how to best clean it, but that's one nice looking 'survivor' you got there.

I use brake cleaner, even on the car. That and a toothbrush work great at getting cast surfaces clean and without residue smeared everywhere. The brake cleaner all evaporates, while degreasers turn your dirt into mud and have to be cleaned off with something else. Painted surfaces are the only thing that might get marred instantly from brake cleaner.
Off the car, beadblasting will get it looking like new. |

Another vote for plenty of brakecleaner, toothbrush and patience. Tumbling does a good job of bringing out a good finish, soda blasting looks very nice too, is cheap and not abrasive at all, will not change the finish but will look newer than anything else. Local machine shop should be able to do this.

If it were mine, I remove it and glass bead blast it, as Central Coaster said, it will look like new. While the carbs are off you could use carb cleaner and a toothbrush on them to bring them back too.

I was going to suggest that but, the car's worth more if the manifold's never been off.

Manifold has been off but never cleaned good. The person who restored the car wanted something original and untouched. He told me he chose the manifold since it would have no effect on the opperation of the engine clean or not. |
