For the past 4-5 yrs I've been holding out on buying a real truck. I've been towing and daily driving a series of "beltway beater" Jeep Cherokees.... Well the current one is actually pretty nice.

Problem is it's too light, too short wheelbase, and way underbraked for towing. Add in it dosen't get very good gas mileage even unloaded - barley getting 14-16mpg around town and for some reason this current one won't break 20mpg on the hwy to save its life... 19mpg is the best I've ever got with it... I'm ready to buy something that I can tow with and get about the same mileage.

I've been looking local for the past week. Didin't quite know what I wanted but figured a nice GM truck would be good... althou I really like the looks of the 4dr short bed Ford F150's...

Only definates I had were
1) it had to be 4X4
2) It had to be 4 door
3) It had to have V8 power

Among all the Tahoe's and F150's, I happen upon a really nice low mile (60K) 2002 Avalanche Saturday evening at a local dealer.

***TIME TO BUY STOCK IN ARMOR ALL***

I didn't think I would like it that much but I kinda did. The styling it definatly "different". However once I drove it - I really liked it. It drives and rides really good. Smooth ride for a 4X4. It has a bunch of room in the back seat. The bed is small but I have a trailer for my motorcycles and I can fit all my gas cans, gear and camping stuff in the bed no problem. I also like the lockable, water proof cover system it has. The 5.3 LSX has decent power/acceleration. I looked up the RPO's and it has (GT4) 3.73 gears and (G80) locking rear diff. Already has a GM installed towing hitch and trailer light/brake hook up as well.

I did a pre approved loan app with my credit union (Navy Federal) this morning on line. After lunch I went over to the bank pcked up the check, headed over to the dealer and drove it off the lot. Now its been 1995 since I finaced a car... I don't remember it being this easy before... BTW I paid $10,500 out the door.

I've already found out that 285/75's will fit on the stock lift and that CORSA makes 2 different exhaust systems for it.... With that knowlege I see no reason to keep it stock.

I'll take some pics tomorrow after work.

I have a 99 Yukon with a tow pkg. Man I live that truck. I imagine the ride would be similar. 120k miles and going strong. I would not be afraid to drive my truck to Anchorage from Florida. I wish you many great times in the future. Sounds like you paid a fair price.

Congrats on the new truck. I'm on my third fullsize chevy/GMC (98 Tahoe, 00 Tahoe, 97 GMC Sierra), and they've all been excellent trucks. Enjoy it!

Congrats.
The 5.3 is a bitcin' engine.
Mine's in a 2wd, 2000 Silverado, 130k miles. The motor: uses zero oil, has zero leaks and pulls my 3,500 lb enclosed trailer & racecar over a 8,000 ft. mountain at 60mph.
18 mpg around town, 24 on a trip, but again, 2wd.

At 130k, the only thing I've done to the motor has been replacing the EGR check valves to pass smog.

Bought for $12,500 5 years ago w/64k miles. Now at 130k, I replaced one front wheel bearing and that's it.

Enjoy your new ride

Sorry it was almost dark when I got home.

I'm going to have to jack the torsion bars up to level it out. Some bigger all terrain tires and a new exhaust will make a world of difference as well.

Excellent! I really liked those trucks when they first came out but I couldn't afford the price tag at the time. Good find!

Wrapped in these

With this for sound (most likely)

BUT - maybe just maybe - if I've got the spare $$$ left after wheels and tires, this is my first choice for sound

It should be a very sweet truck in a few weeks.

Sweet deal. My wife wants me to get a newer truck for some towing and some hauling. I want something like a crew cab so I can seat about four people comfortably. I hadn't considered the Avalanche, looked on ebay and there are lots of them. I prefer a manual trans but couldn't find one. Did they come with a standard trans?

No Manual trans. The C1500 Avalanche's came with the 5.3L Vortec and 4L60E 4spd auto trans. The C2500 Avalanche's came with the 8.1L Vortec and 4spd auto as well.

Lots of guys here have GM trucks with the same auto tranny and pull their race cars and bikes and stuff with no problems.

I can tell you the Avalanche's are nice trucks. Lots of room inside and they drive very nice. I don't know how well it tows yet but next month I have a trip to south GA (from NOVA). I will be stopping by my friends shop in NC to pick up a SS Monte Carlo and dragging it down there.

The back seats in the extended cabs are pretty comfortable (Silverado) for 2 people and your knees don't hit the front seat at all. I've done 4 hours in one with no complaint.

The crew cabs do have a little more room but the extra length makes the truck long especislly with the long bed. Makes it a pain in tight parking lots and a bit harder to jack a trailer into a tight pit space, ect.

The Avalanche has good room in the back and is nice and short.
