It's been a while since I've posted about Eighties Cars on Guru, but I've been working at it: 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1982 Oldsmobile Toronado Brougham There have been the usual auctions, of course—the most interesting recent was Mecum Indy. |

I continue to be amazed at the pathetic offerings in the early 80's.....how far we have come and don't make me go back there......On that Toronado...make mine the 5.7 Diesel engine..... yeah that will be good right? hahahahaahahaaaa.......... I remember I bought an 81 Caprice with that engine in it because ........ I can't remember why...... mileage? torque? Whatever reason it was the wrong one......
They docked me 1200 bucks when I traded it in on a 1986 Thunderbird just like awesome Bill from Dawsonville was driving and kicking ass in NASCAR. First Ford I ever bought......not a bad car.....Turbo 4 banger but would move right along....... They would take those diesel cars like that and yank the engine out of them and put a small block back in it and then they could sell them....... I don't think you see a lot of those Diesel cars at the auctions..... |

John.... an easy answer to both of your questions... "someone who needs serious therapy."
The Electra was a nice car, if not under performing!! |

I was thinking about this... 4.1 litre V6... then, 110hp, maybe. Today, Nissan has a 3.8 litre TT V6 that hits nearly 600 and more then likely gets about the same MPG.
The 6.2 litre LT1 gets 30+ MPG highway, and puts out 460hp. We have come a LONG way... |

I also just remembered I had around 1400 bucks into that 81 Caprice in reworking the heads on the 5.7 Diesel engine....Very common on those engines. Basically a gas engine they tried to make work with 22 to 1 compression .... Fail.......

Kind of like putting high-pressure fuel injection into a car that used to have throttle-body fuel injection and thinking that you don't need to upgrade the computer ... oh, wait. |

oh, a quick thought... as per GMs standard of operations, after a couple of years, they got the diesel down right.
A friend has a later (1985? 1986?) Buick Electra coupe with the 5.7 litre diesel... and that car ran GREAT. Ran for a long, long time. |

Cars from the 80s have a special place in my heart. When I got my license in 2002 an 80's car was all I could afford. Had a blast in my 1985 Monte Carlo SS. It was beat but boy was it fun to drive. Of the 40 or so cars I have owned since then, that Monte ranks #2 on my favorites list.
Lets not forget of course the end of the C3 era and the birth of the C4... my 2 favorite generations of corvette spanned that decade. Cars on my current to own list may not seem to impressive and are certainly very affordable if you can even find them. Some of them span into the 90's but they are 80s inspired. Chevy Lumina Z34 with the 3.4L DOHC V6 Chevy Beretta GTZ Quad 4 with a Getrag 282 5 speed The Pontiac 6000 STE AWD Chevy Caprice DG |

On the Chevy Diesel's.....it took them awhile with the 6.1 then the 6.5 in pickups...but the Duramax is the real deal. mated up with the Alison Trany its as good a big 5th wheel tower as anything out there.....have had several of them.....
Interesting list DanS....... The Barettas GTZ with the Olds engine and Getrang 5 speed was a nice car..... very hard to find these days...... |

I did not know that. I will read up on it....... My 12 Duramax has the LML engine which has 400 hp and 700 some foot lbs of torque....... I have about 120K miles on it and the only thing that has goofed up is the DEF injection set up and they fixed that under warranty........ hell of a truck........ the 17's have 445 hp and 900 ft lbs to help pull those big barges to the warm climes of the sunny southland........

We love our 2005 Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax. 12 years and 180k miles later it still bucks like a bull. Back to the 80's. I had a loaded 83 Cavalier two tone brown metallic with a dark brown velour interior, 4 door, auto. Looked like a Caddy Cimarron. Traded in my 79 Trans Am and bought that family car since I thought I'd better start maturing and acting like a family man and adult. Stupidest thing I ever did. I had it for three years and spanked it mercilessly. Blew up the engine at about 72k miles. Replaced the engine and traded that dog in for an 85 S-10 extended cab, 6 cylinder stick. That truck ran great and it was comfortable as well. Later I got a 90 Ford Bronco. Guess the 80's cars moved me into the truck offerings. From Bronco to Yukon. Yukon to Suburban as primary vehicles.

Out of the cars listed I'd have to go with the T/A just because. |
