Bought myself a new truck. I looked at all of the 3/4 and 1 ton models. As much as I hate to admit it, Ford has GM and FCA covered in the HD truck market.

Its a base Model XL crew cab short box 4x4. Only options are 3.55 gears and electronic locking rear differential. Honestly I would love to have a King Ranch but all trucks are unbelievably expensive these days and the Diesel engine is an additional $10,500 option in thr F250/350.

This is a big step down in comfort from my 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 z71, which was loaded but I need a bigger truck with serious towing capabilities and the F350 delivers. I really haven't been driving the Sierra much since I paid it off 2yrs ago and bought a 2009 Caddy CTS-V to daily.

BTW I got $18,500 for the 2013 Seirra with 87k miles on it.... not bad and I used that money to pay off my Caddy and was able to put 5 grand down on the F350. Carmax told me that the used truck market is on fire and that a niced used z71 like mine will sell in no time.

Anyway the F350. Its powerful and the 10spd is quite smooth. It's quiet for a diesel engine and you'd think the big 6.7 Powerstroke would be noisey but its a world away from those old bangy/clangy 7.3 Diesels.... refined is almost the word I'd use to describe it.... Almost, it's still unmistakable as a diesel. Did I mention the POWER?
It'll light the tires up effortlessly at WOT with the traction control off.

The ride is truck like for sure but not much worse than the 1500 Sierra z71 was. My 03 Avalanche 4x4 was a big comfy couch by comparison to the Sierra and the F350 is just a touch stiffer again. It drives straight and effortless. Seemingly the turning radius is better than the Sierra despite it being way bigger. Coming from the Avalanche, I never got good at parking the Sierra but so far I can park this new F350 with minimal effort.

Build quality seems good but it's hard to mess up the cheapest interior stuff like a big rubber floor mat and cloth seats, (which are comfy). The paint is immaculate... no orange peel slick as glass which is impressive considering the body is aluminium on the Fords.... the panel fit is utilitarian at best. Gaps are even but there is a lot of bow in the aluminium panels and they all stick out at the back.

I'll be using it to pull my race car of course. Looking at an enclosed trailer for these multiday races we have been attending this year. Need to be able to lock the car up overnight and carry more tools/stuff which you can't do with an open trailer. I had towed my car in a buddies 24ft enclosed trailer a few times with the Sierra and it wasn't terrible but you could tell it was overloaded. After using my brothers Dodge 3500 to tow it in his 32ft enclosed, there was no comparison.... it was much like towing my 18ft open trailer behind my old 1500. After that experience, I was never going to use my 1500 to pull an enclosed trailer again.

So the search began and here it is.

Thanks Gurus.

Recently got back from Georgia racing at the last event of 2020. Pulled a 32ft V nose loaded with my Corvette and everything we needed for the race. Truck will pull it as fast I wanted to go, no problem but I kept itto 75mph somy brother didn't have to run his Dodge hard pulling his camper.

I averaged 15mpg towing loaded to the hilt. Averaged 21mpg unloaded driving 75mph down there and back home. It's averaging 18mpg around town but I don't have a ton of time checking that as mostly work from home right now.

We did decent at the race. Qualified 11th in the 32 car field.... 44 cars attempted to make it in and everyone brought their best stuff. My car was wheel standing something fierce all week, it'll do that as we were really cranking the power trying to keep up with these guys and I was worried as I know how easily my car can get up on the bumper..... Just missed the top 10. We were 9th on the field comfortably and decided to play it safe on the last qualifying pass and others went for it. We got bumped 2 spots by a few tenths.

I didn't want my brother taking that ride/flight potentially tearing my car up, so in eliminations out of desperation I got the front shock adjustment too tight and the car struck the tires right after the hit. I felt bad to loose like that but we weren't going to outrun the guy anyway....he made a killer pass faster than my car has ever been in this trim.

Looking forward to the 2021 season now that I have a HD truck to pull the load.

Will

Glad to hear you're enjoying the truck and the car is doing well. Who won the race? Was it a blue SBF nitrous mustang from Chicago?

Martin Connelly won my class. They are from Kentucky and have a grey Mustang. Shawn Pelvor in Jon Kovias's car was runner up. I'm not sure where they are from but it's a teal Mustang.

Must have been a different class or even event. A friend of a friend won a race in Georgia same day. Just thought it was coincidental.

I have to agree with you on the Super Duty's.... my new job came with an 18 F250 Crew cab with the 6.7 in it..... I have had nothing but Duramax's up till now. The engine tranny combo really hauls the mail..... I was headed between meetings the other day and looked down and was turning 2K rpm's at 80 mph.... its effortless and as you say very quiet....

I was talking to a client who has a big 5'er and a Duramax and he went out west this summer with it and said that about all he saw out there in the campgrounds were the 6.7's..... finally looks like Ford got it right..... congrats on your new ride...

sweet rig!!!! As for lighting up tires... if my engine had 1000 ft-lbs of torque, I would ruin tires... on a daily basis!!!!
