I am confused about a spring. Because of the custom steering wheel we don't have all parts.

I took a look at the Shop Manuals of 1985 and 1988 which was a little confusing. The '88 manual does show a spring and a retainer which are not shown by the '85 manual.

Does anyone know if I need this spring/retainer for the '85 and what their function is?
