Re: Injectors----how do you know what size is right?

Subject: Re: Injectors----how do you know what size is right?

I tried to track down exactly what the injectors I have are, since I could not find a specific spec sheet on them.

I got in touch with Standard Automotive Products, the manufacturer. I spoke directly to the ENGINEER who designs these things. He spent and hour and a half on the phone with me going over exactly how an injector works.

We calculated that my car would require 28-33LB injectors. 33LB would be preferred by his estimates. I'm going to split the difference at 30#s.

We went through the nuances of disc vs. Pinter vs. Pinter disk. He calculated the fuel pressure I would need to use my current injectors, which is 82PSI. The magnets in my injectors will not overcome those pressures and the injector will not open.

He also explained how companies arrive at flow numbers. One company's 30 pound injector may be another's 32 pound injector. There 's three different liquids used to flow injectors, an alcohol, something else, and gas. Alcohol is more viscous and will report different flow numbers, lower flow numbers.

He also explained what the duty cycle meant and why it was important.

Finally, you'd be surprised how many injectors roll off the assembly line from the same plant. Same materials, same QC, same QA. One goes left it's X brand, if it goes right it's Y brand.

Which in retrospect makes me chuckle how people say X brand is better than Y brand when the only difference is the stamped number on the casing and the color of the plastic top...

I learned a lot and I will consider a number of brands that these guys OEM for (he asked me not to mention the brands, so I won't). The first person who tells me that brand sucks will be talking out of their ass.

This is the kind of research I did with my entire build. I did not leave it to manufacturer advertising, marketing, internet blowhards (present company excluded) and paid for magazine articles. Go to the source, they know better than anyone.

I hope this helped someone, somewhere.
